Sony Ps 4750 cartridge alignment

I've got a Sony Ps 4750 turntable and a grado green series cart and needle. No matter where I move it in the original headshell I can't get distortion to stop at the end of the record and it's bad distortion. Can someone tell me what protractor to use or give me suggestions. I tried using a newer headshell but with it having a metal clip on the original it throws the weight very off.

Try the Stevenson first.

Try the Baerwald if you you are not happy with the Stevenson and if your headshell have long enough screw slots. :music:

I've got a PS-4750 also, that I bought at a yard sale. Does yours have the stylus overhang checker? It fits in the slotted hole next to the platter at about 5 o'clock when standing in front of the deck looking down at it. The owners manual shows that you would initially set the cartridge in the headshell so that the distance from the tip of the stylus to the back of the rubber ring is 49mm. My overhang checker was missing when I bought the deck. But setting the cartridge/stylus to that 49mm is a good starting point. 49mm is also the distance for many Pioneer decks. After messing with protractors, I went with the 49mm and find that to work just fine.

Just a thought, is it one record that you're using to check alignment or all your records are having the IGD (inner groove distortion)?

I have a couple LP's that are just poorly pressed and no matter how much fiddling I do, they still have IGD. The majority of my LP's are fine. So if you are just using one LP, try a different one.

I once spent an hour chasing phantoms from what turned out to simply be a particularly dreadful James Brown pressing.
