Sony PS 5520 service help

Greetings!

I recently picked up a Sony PS-5520 turntable and need to start a forum to help me bring it back to life. My initial question has to do with the corky saw dust like spring cushions that go under the inner compression springs. Sony's part number for the spring is 4-804-634-11 and the cushions I am referring to are 4-812-527-00. The cushions in the turn table now have crumbled away and have a dusty residue all over. They look like little pyriamids now but the service manual shows a big rectangle? What have you guys done to replace them or do I even need them? Any help would be appreciated!!

Just cut up a regular foam sponge. Nothing special required.

They really do help control vibration. When the auto functions of those tables operate they can shake quite significantly for example.

Yes I have, plus other tables with similar springs and foam. Which reminds me that I have one in the garage that needs work. Maybe today should be my roundtoit day.

Awesome I may use you as a resource for the bigger problems! What better time than now!? I may have to end up changing the cartridge because a replacement for my At Tk5e is way over what I want to put in this table and I'm afraid to use the needle it came with.

So for those with the Sony PS 5520, I found that when the metal platter is on the turntable, it was nowhere near high enough, so it was just scraping the top of the turntable. I went to inspect and found that the shaft bearing was missing the set screw as well as a thrust washer. So I improvised and went to the local hardware store and found some copper washers, I believe they were #4s. I also picked up a nylon washer a little bit smaller. I had to sand down the copper washers to fit as they were just barely too big. I needed about 4mm thickness with all the washers stacked together, I only bought enough copper ones to make 3mm and the nylon washer was 2mm. So I used the nylon and 2 copper washers. Worked like a charm.

@Montycat so I got the table working, kinda. The cue arm needs to push up higher, and the dumb thing wont stop repeating. When the tone arm reaches the center it goes back, sits down and then picks up and starts all over again. I do not think I have it in repeat mode. Also, when the tone arm gets close to the cradle, it sounds like its getting really tight and makes a destressed sound. Any tips for fixing the cue arm height, destressed sound, and/or the auto repeat function? Thank you!

My 2251 has a headshell that is muuch lower than the wand. About a quarter inch. I think possibly to work with low rise Japanese MC (Denon 103 and Sony models) broadcast carts. I have wondered if the cuing would gain sufficient height with a traditonal headshell.
