***Sony PS-8750 Question***

Hello

I have a Sony PS-8750. I purchased it at a garage sale about 7 years ago. The unit is in near-perfect condition with just a few small scratches on the top-lid. I used the turntable a few times when I first purchased it and has

**Could anyone tell me how much it is worth? Please only comment if you have personal experience with this unit or know someone who has.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

I picked up one recently for free.In limited research I found that they can be highly desirable if in very good condition.Even as a parts unit they have substantial value as a 70s turntable goes.

Sounds Good!

Thanks Superdog and Titan for the info (nice job on picking up a free one Superdog)!

If anyone else has thoughts on this unit, I would like to hear about it. The unit is in very good condition, but is missing one small piece (something called a Shell Stand). Not sure what this piece does, but seems to have no effect on the units ability to play records. Again, I am new to the world of turntables but seek any input I can get.

I will include a Pic of the unit

Thanks

I have one that needs to be recapped and even in this condition I'd have to insist on $500+.

It's a pretty impressive piece of machinery and will yield a spectacular listening experience with a good cart.

I switched between a Firelity Reseaarch FR1MkIII and a GAS Sleeping Beauty and I really love it.

Enjoy.

One of Sony's great non-esoteric tables, right alongside the B80, X70, X75 and X65. Those five seem to run at the top edge of the standard consumer tables, before you run into the PS-X9 bit of amazing "cost is no object" engineering.

That is a beauty Rodney! I guess in that nice condition it is worth even more...especially to someone who loves sony equipment!
You wont find these on every streetcorner....so rarety is also an issue in adding value to a component (besides condition)

Shell Stand

Does anyone know the purpose of a Shell Stand (Yes, I am a beginner - thanks for your patience)? I added a photo in my previous thread which shows the spot where the Shell Stand is stored/sits (small hole designed to hold this piece). It is the one small piece this unit is missing. I have looked on-line to determine its purpose, with no success. Does not seem to have any effect on the units ability to play records.

Another thought. I purchased the least-expensive needle/cartridge I could to get the unit up-and-running (still have the one that came with the unit, but the actual needle was toast - not sure if it was the original). How much would a decent cartridge cost, and does it make that much of a difference (this may be a dumb question, but again-a beginner)? I realize this may also be a very subjective question (different people - different thoughts).

It is always nice to be reaffirmed in the quality of my gear (turntable), so Thanks for everyone's input.

On the other Sony units I have there is no part called a shell stand. There is the same hole that you are showing, though. It is just a simple hole to hold an extra headshell. Where did you get the idea there was another part?

If all you are doing is selling it, then I would just leave the cart you have now on it. I doubt you would get your money back by installing a pricier cart. If you are going to keep it and use it, that is a whole different animal. There are a ton of choices, depending on budget. What make/model cartridge is on there now?
edit: Looking at your picture it might be a Shure V15. If so, then you have a great cart(if you are keeping the table), or something that will either add value to the table(if you are selling), or net you a little extra money if sold separately.

The 2250 and 2251 are also very nice earlier tables. I have a 2251, currently on loan to another AKer who really seems to like it.

Shell Stand Take 2

Thanks for the quick response!

I found the term "Shell Stand" in the manual, but could not find a description or purpose (unless overlooked). You may be right, the word "Shell" might refer to an empty space used for added/additionally purchased gear (extra stuff).

I purchased the cartridge about 7 years ago when I first got the unit at a garage sale (have no idea of the make and model). I will get back to you when I have time to remove it and look for a model #.

Thanks

The word shell refers to headshell, the thing that the cartridge is mounted to. The hole is just a place to put an extra headshell. Some people like to run two(or more) cartridges and this gives them a place to put the extra headshell. A very handy feature. My Sony PS-X55 doesn't have it and I wish it did. I've got two extra headshells and no easy place to store them.

Enlightened

That explains everything. The unit came with an extra shell (not from manufacturer) and what do you know, it fits perfectly into the empty hole (called the shell stand - makes since - a place for the extra shell to stand).

Thanks Again

Imagine that.:D Is there a cart in the extra headshell?

Wow, I have one of those tables in my basement. I never knew what model it was before you posted your photos. I never used it because the speed is not consistent, and I never looked into having it fixed. One thing is for sure: its a beautiful beast.

There is an extra cart in the other shell but it has a broken needle (this was the cart that came with the turntable when I first acquired it). Do not have the appropriate screwdriver to remove the cart/needle currently in use. Thus, I cannot tell you the make/model of the one I am using (don't think I payed more then $30-$40 for it 7 years ago - thus probably a cheap one). When I am able to get the cart removed, I will send out another post with make/model.

Thanks

Just learning about mine Urchinn. Seems to be a fairly rare turntable (only made for 3 years). I have played several records on mine with no intermittent speed problems, bummer yours is having this issue. If you have not figured it out yet, be careful lifting the beast (as you called it). I cannot believe it ways almost 32lbs. Enjoy

Lots of people would love to own that PS-8750 Rodney....it is one of the nicer upmarket vintage models.
Funny you thought the turntable to be incomplete......because there is a hole in it. :D

As my memory serves me well....the original big dustcover had some lines in it.....so you could check the right angle and position of the tonearm and cartridge in relation to the turning plateau from above.....

The electronics are complex....The X-tall lock system is there to constant check the speed and correct it when there is some deviation.
