Sony PS-FL77 tonearm issue

Hello, first post here. I acquired a PS-FL77 from my grandparents and have been working on fixing it up but I’ve run into this issue: when the power is on and TT is idle, the end of the tonearm oscillates back and forth repeatedly. I’m going to try to attach a video to show it. Then when I hit start, the arm goes and sets down like normal (I think), immediately skates all the way to the middle of the record, gives up and goes back home. I just put a new cartridge on it so I don’t want to replicate that for a video and cause more damage. It did this with both the old broken stylus that was on it and the new one. If i put gentle horizontal pressure on the arm it stops wiggling, so it sort of seems it’s just not happy with something. Been doing research but I’m kind of stumped now. Servo issue perhaps?

I’ve never had an TT before but I like tinkering so if anyone has any idea what’s going on I would greatly appreciate it. This seems to be a rather… complicated… machine. Hoping this is fixable. Thanks all!
