Sony PS-LX210...Whoops!

Rhubarb

a spinnin' an' a grinnin'
Hey guys!

I've been lurking for a while, soaking in as much information as I can, before I make a silly post, but I think I messed up today.

I am pretty new to tts, and currently have a Technics SL-QX300, that isn't in the best shape. I've been looking on the bay for something to upgrade too and have been getting sniped and outbid like a banshee, although, that's the way she goes on the bay, these days. No big deal to me, I know patience is a virtue, but I definitely acted impulsively on this one.

I just placed the winning bid on a Sony PS-LX210, not even close to what I have been bidding on, but, haste makes waste, so the saying goes. The winning bid? $10.49 US. Shipping: $50 from Canada.

I think if I have this right, this Sony tt doesn't use a p-mount or normal style cartridges, so I'm pretty much stuck with what Sony or LPgear has to offer right?

How bad did I get burned? Or am I not too far in the red? Please tell the truth, I can take it.

Any other insights, information, ideas?

Pretty much a low-end TT. For 10 bucks that's ok I guess, but the shipping kind of turns it into 'too expensive for what it is' I think.

Might be ok, but I guess you'll see when you get it...

Whoops is right. I hate to make you feel bad, but this was not a wise purchase. Why didn't you check with us here first? You just bought a tt that is of lesser quality than what you had. And yes, the cartridge is integrated in the tonearm so you are stuck with it--an entry level conical AT stylus. $10 wouldn't be bad at a garage sale, but for $60 you did poorly. And $50 to ship this lightweight is a ripoff any way you look at it.

I don't know what you mean by "isn't in the best shape," but the Technics SL-QX300 was one of their best p-mount turntables from that period. Yours has quartz lock, this Sony does not. If the cartridge was the issue, there are still decent new p-mount carts to be had. And then also there are lots of excellent vintage p-mount carts on ebay. Because so many people dismiss p-mounts as junk (a myth) you can pick them up for a song and then just get a new replacement stylus.

My suggestion is to use the Sony as a backup or for record cleaning. Unless it is not functioning properly, keep the Technics and enjoy it. And if it isn't functioning properly, tell us the problem and we can probably help you fix it.

Yikes. Just as I suspected.

Thanks for laying out the straight dope. I appreciate it.

I had a pretty good idea that it was a POS when I bid on it, but didn't really take the time to look at shipping. Silly rabbit, a sucker is born every minute... /me is a sucker.

IMPORTANT!

Regarding being the winning bidder on eBay . . . make sure that the seller REMOVES THE PLATTER before shipping to you. This should be wrapped separately in bubble wrap and placed OUTSIDE the rest of the turntable chassis and cover.

If this is not done, the platter will likely come off during shipping and your turntable will be toast.

The feedback on this seller looks pretty darn good, lots of good feedback on TTs. Although, I guess if I does get destroyed, I can cash in on the insurance, ;)

Too bad :( But yes this is an instance where if it gets damaged in transit, oh well. As Howard suggest, get a new cart for the Q300 :)
