Sony ps-x600 arm drop-point problem

I have a working ps-x600 and it performs great. I only replaced the fuse resistors and cleaned it. They are really nice tables.

I also have one that I got for cheap since it’s not working properly. The arm drop-point isn’t correct. The screw adjustment method isn’t working and the drop-point is almost different every time and usually too far inside the record.

This is my thread to track progress of the repair. Hopefully I can get some help from others who also had this problem.

On another note, this service manual is really comprehensive with voltages written on the board.

Have owned 3 of these tables. They are normally pretty trouble free. the only possible drawback is no arm height adjustment. Before you go too far are all the OEM caps still in place? I don't remember the circuit well enough to offer any detailed input but before you go too far, you may consider replacing all the electrolytics and then check your voltages and scope patterns.

When you say "... drop point isn't correct" do you mean it lands slightly off from where it should or it lands at random positions on the record?

Just to make sure, you do have the platter mat on and aligned to the holes in the platter, correct?
Is the problem with 33 rpm and 45 rpm vinyl or only one? Black vinyl only, no transparent discs.
Also, check to make sure that the sensor light is operational.
Do you have an oscilloscope?
You can look at the signals on the collectors or Q111 and Q112 to see if you are getting pulses as shown below.

If the problem is with the position sensor then check the signals on TP9 and TP10.

It lands at random positions on the record. I was under impression that using a 12” record the light detection / mat position wouldnt matter since it covers the holes for the light to go through.

Also, I can try and recap it but I don’t want to go there yet if I can diagnose it first. The caps are all original.
 
Do you have an oscilloscope to look at signal timing?
If yes, do you know how to use it to troubleshoot electronic signals?

I don't think you will be able to operate the turntable upside down. You will need to use clip leads to the test points attached to your scope probes.
Rest your turntable feet on some 2x4's to raise it up to operate.

Connect one oscilloscope probe to TP9 and clip to chassis ground. (green line next to IC101 pin 13)
Connect the other probe to TP10 and clip to chassis ground. (green line next to IC101 pin 12)
You should see a couple of square waves with phase relationship as shown below.

I was worried about this. It ended up being sensors that were dirty for the leds or the adjustment screw on top causing a gap making the reading off on the drop point. Now it’s cleaned and working well. I need to re take this picture with the 45 adapter.

Thank you for your help and fortunately it wasn’t something electronic. The only parts I replaced were all the fuse resistors.

It sounds like you have something intermittent. You need to trace the signals to see which component is intermittent and if it is a sensor or something else.
You didn't answer my previous question if you had an oscilloscope and knew how to use it.

I appreciate your willingness to help. I haven’t had a focused effort on this unit yet since I had so many things get in the way. But yes, you bet I do. That’s not saying from time to time I have to second guess a button on my scope since they have so many lol. I will keep you posted on this thread. Thanks!
