I would have suspected a bad Hall sensor, part of the motor.

That X600 is a beautiful table! Enjoy it while it lasts and repair it when it breaks down. I don't know if you have any electronics repair skills, but I find myself getting possibly more satisfaction out of (and spending more time on) making repairs, than even listening to my records! But that's just me. Have fun!

Thank you, I absolutely love the table. And I know what you mean - I'm not much on electronics repair, but I put a lot of time and effort into rebuilding a Pioneer PL-530 that I'll never ever ever let go because it's something I put my hands on and learned a lot by fixing. But that was mostly mechanical stuff. Electronics are next level... I was just proud of my ability to desolder and resolder the tonearm wires' connection to the circuit board without breaking anything or burning down my office.

These upper-crust Sony's are well known for having geriatric problems. I had the aforementioned X600 and it was a stunning and amazing turntable. But in the back of my mind was the ever-lingering thought that at any moment, all of that technology could go south. I understand that the Biotracer models, although reliable for almost 30+ years, can be a bear to fix. You almost have to have specialized training to repair them.
