Sony PS-X700 - Tonearm encounters friction when record is playing causing records to skip

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but I looked through old posts and couldn't find much help on this issue. I brought home a Sony PS-X700 turntable today and it starts up fine. The tone-arm moves to the LP edge fine and doesn't drop - which is one issue. But the most frustrating part is that inevitably when it is playing a record, about halfway through the record, the tonearm encounters some friction that stops it from moving any further, which causes the record to skip.

Has anyone encountered this issue with a biotracer tonearm before? Any good service folks in the NYC metro area?

I have encountered this issue, not with an X700, but I have with an X600. It sounds to me like the grease for the mechanicals has thickened. You will need to go inside and remove and replace that grease.

Go to VinylEngine and see if the service guide is there. If it isn't, the X600 service guide is and would likely be helpful.

Good luck! It is a really nice turntable! I love my X600! It gets regular use in one of my systems.
 
Just to close this out - my biggest issue - the tonearm not advancing horizontally about halfway through the record... this was actually a screw that was missing from the bottom cover... it magnetized to the bottom of the tonearm area and was causing the friction... Totally insane. It was a 5 minute fix.

Still probably needs new grease, but at least it's functioning!
 
I just picked up one of these. I don't have a pre-preamp so I swapped out the 33XL moving coil with the headshell and V15II from my PS-X5. I love all the automatic features but it honestly doesn't seem to sound as good as the PS-X5. Is this a Biotracer thing or is there something wrong with my turntable? With the 33XL it skipped on inner cuts and wouldn't play 45s at all. It now will, but they sound a little off.

Clean the old grease, Sony grease is as bad as Garrard or BSR and can easily get gummed up and I've seen it turn to cement. It can wreak havoc on your mechanism. Use plastic safe grease. Same unobtainable parts fail when Sonys are neglected. Better safe than sorry!
