Sony PS1 - skipping on CDs

Some say the original Sony PS1 SCPH-1001 with the L/R audio outputs makes a good CD player. Picked one of these up for $10 some time ago. It plays CDs, but skips like a record player. The laser lens appears to be clean. Anyone have any ideas on what might be done to stop the skipping??

It needs a good cleaning. I have that same one, and it plays all CD-R's and store bought CD's fine.

Plus, please make sure the CD's are free of an accessive amount of scratches and fingerprints.

I have never had to do any laser adjustments yet, and I bought mine brand new.

Clean it, Q-tip w/alcohol. Clockwise then change tips and back CClock. I
do this twice. PStation are prone to shake. If you hold it tight while playing, you'll notice deeper bass and beter seperation.
If cleaning still didn't entirely help-

oops, because they shake put on a very stable base,(heavy) and in between those maybe a 1" thick piece of soft squishy or foam or what have you.

Sorry to bump this up but I need a quick answer regarding the PS1.

When I try to play CD's some work and some don't. ???? any ideas???? The first CD-R I burned worked fine. Burned another one (different brand) and it won't play. Tried some store bought CD's, one worked and the other didn't.

Any ideas??? Thanks!

I think a lot of early CD players, whether gaming systems or standalone audio, were a lot more particular as to brand of discs they would play. I have a couple of PS1s but have not tested them enough to say what works, bit I know I read about this somewhere.

Just FYI, mine is still playing flawlessly. Still plays both store bought and CD-R's. It is not my only player, but it is the one I use after I make a CD-R on my computer. In my experience with mine, if it plays on my PlayStation, it will play in everything else. I have not been dissapointed yet!

It has never been dropped, kicked, or abused sinse new so it may have something to do with how well it still works after all these years.........or...........maybe I just got lucky with this one. :D

14+ years later I've got it playing. Sat in a drawer ever since 2011. Recapped the power supply board, which may also do other things too. It still skipped after the recap. Also would not play a burned CDR. Cleaned the laser lens a couple of times and it is playing now a factory produced CD.

May be a microalignment or jitter stability issue. I retired my PS1 and PS2 to the big console heaven in the closet.

Nintendo gaming consoles have a connection issue between the game cassette and the unit's female connector. It's just wear, and I can't find any of those board-mounted OEM proprietary female NOS connections anymore. Aftermarket generic ones do not last long.
