Talked to the guy I bought my Marantz TT from a few weeks back...he's got what he said over the phone is a Sony STR-4800 for sale. Looked on Craigslist at some tuners and he's got it listed there as well, but as Sony STR-4800SD.

What's the difference between the 4800 and the 4800SD?

Looks like there are two different models, and the pics in his ad for the SD look different from the 4800.

Is the SD better? He's asking about $50. I may be able to get it for a little less...the Marantz he sold me, he was asking $100 but took $75.

Just looking for info on this 4800SD and wondering if it sounds good with a TT? I saw somewhere someone was saying the 4800 (Non-SD version) has a lot of hiss with phono setups.

The 4800(SD) has a good tuner and a lovely sound (great tone). However I would not recommend for TT. Try to get a Sony 6060, 6200, or 6120.
 
Not good with TT? Just a bad sound or what? Would any kind of preamp help with that out of curiosity (been thinking about getting one).
 
Yea a sub par phono....noise level. A reasonal phono pre connected to aux might work wonders. But why do that? Just buy a good all round receiver.
 
Just curious if a preamp would help the TT sound in general...I'm running through a Yamaha receiver right now...and I may just keep it going - it's a more recent receiver...I don't have the model number handy (and my memory is terrible) but I believe I got it probably about...oh...12 years ago maybe. I was going to dedicate it to running my TV/PS3 setup and then possibly run a separate system with TT and vintage receiver...and then also have my iPod to run through either receiver as needed....

Or maybe I should just run it all through my Yamaha and keep it simple...regardless, would still consider a preamp if it makes a big difference in sound quality. EDIT: Would also like to maybe get preamp with USB for the purposes of sound improvement and ability to rip vinyl if I ever wanted to do so...
