Sony SACD Player will not play MoFi Hybrids

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to Super Audio CDs. I have a few single layer SACDs and a few hybrids. I recently acquired a used Sony CD595 player in immaculate condition (it looks like NOS!). It plays single layer and hybrid SACDs flawlessly.

Last month, I purchased Mofi's Santana's Abraxas and David Grisman/Jerry Garcia's hybrid discs. For some reason, the player will not recognize the DSD layer of these two MoFi discs. I know the Sony is not a premium player and I understand these players can be temperamental. That said, I find myself blaming MoFi since these are the only two discs that the Sony hasn't been able to play properly.

My other SACDs play properly and sound awesome on my system. I've calibrated the CD595 (several times), cleaned the laser, and set the default play mode to SACD and Multi/2 channel. Still no joy.

Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks in advance!

Tim

Thanks for the suggestion! I had seen that thread before, and performed a calibration with the player empty. I then inserted one single layer SACD and it played properly as an SACD. I removed it and inserted a Mofi hybrid. Still no joy. I may try with a couple of other single layer SACDs before I just give up and spend $$$ for an Oppo or a Marantz. Meanwhile, onward through the fog . . .

To Mofi being the "problem", I have that Santana and it plays fine in my old Pioneer. Not sure if it's the disks since you have 2 that won't work.

Do you know anyone who has a SACD player? Maybe a HiFi repair shop or retailer nearby where you could try these discs to see if they work? Maybe there's an AK member nearby where you can check the operation on their SACD player? At least you'd be able to verify whether the issue is with the player or disc.

That fixed my 595 several years ago.... Have a Denon 2900 now.

Thanks for the link - I came across that calibration procedure a while back and performed it on the 595. No joy with the two MoFi hybrids. It plays all of my other hybrid and single-layer SACDs flawlessly.

I've yet to find someone in my orbit with an SACD player to definitely identify the problem, but common sense still makes me want to conclude that it is the MoFi discs.

I'm thinking of a Denon DCD-1700NE vs. just sticking with vinyl (or streaming hi-res lossless from Tidal or Apple Music).

It doesn't need to be a CD/SACD player. Most people have DVD players and almost all newer players have SACD capability. Virtually all Sony Blu-Ray or 4K players will read SACD discs.
