Hey guys,

I'm looking currently for an combo SACD/CD player as my Pioneer Elite PD-65 just bit the dust. I would like to eventually repair it someday, but this is the perfect excuse to splurge a little on an SACD player.

Anyways, I've read about how amazing the Sony SCD-1 is, and was wondering what a fair price for one is. Is it even recommended? I know that it was top of the line 7-8 years ago, but perhaps there are other players out there that are equal to or better than the SCD-1.

I am also considering a Pioneer PD-D9-J SACD player. What are your thoughts about those?

without knowing budget, I would still opt for the almost identical but cheaper Sony SCD-777es I think the model is..I had one with some mods and it sounded quite good...
 
I have a budget of $2000. Ideally, I would like to spend as little as possible, but I've been bitten by the "1" series bug.

The SCD-1 I can get for $2000, while the pioneer is half that price.

I am also interested in the McIntosh MCD-500, but I don't know how much those are running.

I'll check in with a friend about some recommendations on them- I had been doing lotsa research on players and a Sony and a Denon were recommended- fairly cheap, and ripe for affordable modifications.

I'll get back to you on that.

I just picked up a PD-65 myself. Waiting for it to arrive. I'm also concerned about it due to age and will probably hunt down a few spares for parts.

Lasers are available for them for around $60 if you decide to go a repair route. Not the easiest to set up, so be sure it's a tech that's familiar with these stable platter period Pioneers.

Wow, I didn't know the McIntosh was quite THAT much. Well, it's definitely NOT an option at this point in time.

What have you guys heard about the Pioneer PD-D9-J?

It's half the price of the Sony, but I am not familiar with the new Pioneer Elite line. Good? Bad? ...Ugly?

I plan on getting the PD-65 repaired locally, but I would also like a nice SACD player to complement the PD-65 for redbook.

The Sony SCD-1 is superb. Their SACD flagship model. The Sony 777ES is excellent and 98% as fine stock. Spindle motors can be a weak point and optical blocks are hard to come by. My wife has 7 of them (Demonstrator models and some NIB. She bought them from a Sony rep for $450 each 4 years ago) All but one are in use. We do have some parts for them. A superb sounding unit. Built like a brick outhouse. Sounds superb on SACD, very nice on redbook but not the last word on redbook unmodified. Recommended if in nice shape and low hours. :tresbon:
 
So spares for the SCD-1 are hard to come by? If I get the SCD-1, am I running the risk of ending up with a very, very expensive 55lb boat anchor?

I'm really impressed with the build quality of the SCD-1...but I am hesitant to take the plunge due to availability of parts. Do you think that this will be a problem if I keep the hours low on the SCD-1 and use my 'workhorse' PD-65 to do most of the redbook reading?
 
Hi,

I think you'll be OK if you limit the SCD-1 to reading SACD only. Before purchasing, make sure it can read SACD Hybrid discs correctly and has no obnoxious noises/dropouts on playback. Those are signs of an optical block going bad slowly. Good luck and Karma!

While the MCD500 is a stellar piece, perhaps a used MCD301 or MVP871 would also suit his needs for several thousand less.

I'd recommend saving up a bit more and going with a McIntosh piece, the MCD301 rarely disappoints (if ever) :)
 
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to go audition the MCD-301 this upcoming weekend. What do you think about the MCD-301 vs. the SCD-1?

I'm a little worried about parts availability for the SCD-1 - say if I have to get something repaired on the SCD-1, are the parts completely unobtanium?

Any thoughts on the Pioneer Elite PD-D9-J?
 
There's a bunch of SCD-777ES parts on audiogon right now. Which are essentially the same as the ones in the SCD-1. And I think straight from Sony they should still be available, but not sure.

A spare set of some of the most common things that would be prone to breakdown (optical block, sled motor etc), should give you enough peace of mind to enjoy one of those players for a long time.
 
Most critical parts for SCD-1 & SCD777es are still available. I have both units. You can not beat the build quality of those at their current used price. If you have the money, the SCD-1 is a bit better, but not too much. However, SCD-1 is a statement piece and not just a black box. MCD500 is $6500. Get a SCD-1 and a PS Audio DAC and you will be VERY happy man and you'll still have money to take the wife out. Check out the link below for internal view of both.

Wow. It looks really nice! I like the nudies, too :P

I'm thinking about just making the jump and getting the SCD-1. I can use my workhorse PD-65 for redbook playback. Just need to get it repaired, is all.

No comments about the newer Pioneer Elite, though?
 
I have an SCD-777ES and love it. A good external DAC (I use an AudioNote) can turn it into a very good redbook machine but the stock player is a killer with SACD. With the right SACD, I find myself enjoying music on it as much as I do with good vinyl and that's something I've never experienced with digital until using the Sony.

There are some stories of reliability issues with these but mine has worked well since new (maybe 5 years) and I hope to have it thoroughly gone through when I get it modded down the road. As good as this player is though, I had a chance to hear a VSE modded version with CD and SACD and it performs at a whole different level - I've got to get my done someday.

The 777 is a great machine that is worth the effort and the SCD-1, even better.
