Sony speaker at Goodwill

I'm always looking at speakers at goodwill and thrift stores, see if anything good comes up. I found this Sony 8004608 tower, it says 200 watt max, 8 ohm resistance, its 17.99, I'm new to this, is this a take or leave?

The speakers looked to be in good condition. No tears or anything. Grill popped right off.

Shooting from the hip... if you are in need of a speaker any speaker you may want to grab them.If you want a better sounding speaker wait and do some research about speakers.One thing about the Sonys is you can most likely get your money back if you sell.Some of the lesser informed think that the buck stops at Sony.
 
For every great Sony speaker there are 100 bad ones. Since they made so many....that's still a lot of great speakers, but chances are this isn't one of them.
 
Is this 1 tower, or a pair? For $18 bucks (for a pair), I would take a chance.

Even if they're crap, it'll give you something to play with. You never know, they might sound good and surprise you.

Plus, the "donation" would be going to a good cause.

I've been advised to avoid Sony speakers. And I've had no trouble finding OK stuff.

One thing, I sometimes buy for looks as I'm a pretty casual listener. So if it's an OK speaker but looks great where it'll be used than I'd go for it.
 
How's the build quality on the cabinets, if they are well built chances are they put something decent inside. I googled the model number and came up with nothing.
 
If they have cables with RCA jacks on the ends, forget it. There a very cheap speaker. But for $18 a pair they might be worth a shot.

Thats kind of a general rule of thumb.If nothing comes up Googling then they more than likely are a unremarkable set from one of the millions of Sony rack systems.
