SONY Speaker w/ single cable (not RCAs)

I wish I took a picture of these and I don't recall the model, but I saw a pair of large floor standing SONY speakers at a thrift store today. They were in great shape, but when I flipped them around to look at the specs, I noticed instead of having two jacks, it had one single thin cable attached to the speaker (not removable) with what looked like a single RCA-like plug. RCA is probably the wrong term here, but it wasn't a pair of wires, it was one RCA-like plug. Speakers were about 45 watts.

My question isn't about the speaker model or specs, it's about the connection. What kind is that? I assume it was made for a specific SONY system maybe? And can you take one of those speakers and modify them to use regular speaker cables. Or is this a sign these are cheap speakers so don't bother.

It's a standard RCA connector, but used to carry a speaker-level signal. It was popular with all-in-one systems and other assorted budget-consious equipment, and you'll still even see it crop up every now and again in very cheap speakers.
 
I wouldn't recommend using interconnects as speaker wire for reasons of performance and reliability, but I'm sure it's been done.
