Hi All
I was given a set of sony ss-u870 speakers. Today I took a look inside and found only 2 caps for the crossovers one 3.9uF cap for the midrange driver and a 1uF for the tweeter the woofer has none could the woofer be a fullrange driver i cant fig this out. The woofer is a 12 inch. I have 2 radio shack 3way crossovers would they work for the sony i have no info on the sony so iam at a lose i would to improve the sound. Any Help ?

Sure, ya might set em out at the end of the range and zing some slugs through them. That might make a GREAT sound! LOL No seriously now...

I am not sure of those Sony's but from how you describe the crossovers (if you dare call them that) It sounds like a fairly cheesey speaker and you might want to think twice about putting to much effort into it. Likely the drivers ain't all that great either.
But on the other hand, try some bracing to help the cabinet if you can and just maybe some stuffing or other dampening materials.

The cabs are good looking they dont sound to bad boy has there ever been a good sony speaker my brother had a set of u48s back in the 70 and thay sound like **** sony has got a lot of nerve to sell thease and call them 3 way LOL I have a set of technics 50.00 a peice bookshelv speakers that have a true 2way crossover and a protector for the tweeter and sound better than the sonys with the 12 inch woofer ? /fullrange LOL
I will see what i can do to them if not i will swap out the drivers and put in some real ones. lol
Thanks
Ron

Hey maybe those Sonys are employing some audiophile type minimal component first order crossover.

They do say simpler is better...

Naaaaaaahhhhhh

:p:

If they sound good, leave em alone unless you must "improve " them....

:D

BTW... not all Sony speakers sound like ****, just most of them.
None of their vintage stuff could ever be considered classic in the good sense.

In Japan they have a humungous, full range electrostatic model plus a few years ago they released the American designed SS-M7 and SS-M9 which were both very good.

Shame they don't apply the same expertise to their mainstream speakers.

Those are just high passes on the mid and tweets to protect them from lows. Having just a cap on the tweeter is not uncommon but you don't see it a whole lot on mids. What do your ears tell you? How heavy are the cabinets?
I have built and will be building another pair of speakers that are 2 ways and only have a cap on the tweeter for the crossover so that in itself is not a bad sign. Complicated crossovers are usually made to compensate for a weakness in the driver(s).

Hi all
just got putting the sony's thru some music that i play all the time
hooked up to my SX-980 and i must admit they sound Great i hadent listen to them before i posted just went on what i saw and said to my self 'just like my brothers speakers and i know what they sounded like. Iam not touching them they are keepers I never knew about caps alone being used and thought it ment cheap speakers but the way they sound and look they must be expensive sorry if i insulted any sony fans out there you can consider me one as well. can any sony fan tell me any thing about this model. SS-U870
Thanks Ron

Found this....

Listing from the 1982 Stereo Review Stereo Directory & Buying Guide ( another publication that I miss , along with the annual Audio Equipment Directory :( ).

Sorry for the size but the print was faint and didn't scan very well.

The Sonys were first listed in 1982, gone by 1985/86, last list price was $760/pr., cheaper than the original price of $480ea.

Afraid I couldn't dig up any specs etc.

They were part of a series of speakers using a direct drive ribbon tweeter....most interesting !

Hope this helps.

PS I'm not a Sony "fan"

Well dragged my buddy out of his apartment to help me carry back one of the Sony SS-u870's I carried the other one of course. What can I tell you about them , well they were made by the Sony of America Corporation in the late 80's. I like the speakers. Was told by the guy who was getting rid of them that they belonged to a school and they had been in the music room sitting there for years. - when I got back to my place, hooked them up and , the tone is horse-sh*t. Get all kinds of bass, but no tone. I was thinking perhaps the Capacitors may have gone kerflewy, but to have that happen in all 4 mid and high range speakers.. - Thinking that the kiddies at school cranked up the sound and drove the tweeters past the point of no return.

Today I actually found a few KLH 200B speakers, plugged them in and WHOA! what is that I hear? clean Crisp tone! WOW. What a novelty that is..

So not going to part with my Sony's just yet, wondering how I would go about replacing the Mid range and high tone speakers. I think I read the small one is only 10 Watts, and the middle speaker is 5 Watts.. Pretty sure the four speakers are fried.
