Sony ss-9500 conga drum speakers

Never seen these before. Anyone encounter these in their collecting over the years? Curious how they would sound with those restricted openings? My first question was why would Sony make something like these?

Most people call them "Bongos", but that's a Conga shape to me.

I've been looking for a nice set of those myself. These look like they're missing the top pads. $500 is way too high. Half that is still a reach.
I think their real value is found in how cool they look, but most comments I've read online indicate they sound OK.

but face it, the imaging has got to be poor with that 360 degree output.

I'd pay $50 for the pair to use them as end tables. They're that groovy, IMO.
