These Sony speakers of this style are really all that?

I know the ssk90eds(very B&W like) seem to have a lot of good things said about them and some of the more expensive high end apms tend to get some praise but they're really that nice?

The price seems rather pricey for Sony considering what else is in that price range in AR, klipsch, pioneer(2 sets of HPM-100s), B&W even, etc...and let's not forget NS-1000s can be had in that price range occasionally...AR-9s have been had for that price range...

How do you compare these to your NS-1000s and NS-500s?

The Sony's in the first picture would certainly be in the same league as the NS-1000s and I think I might even prefer them. The smaller versions are very nice, as well. I would have a difficult time choosing AR9s over them if the price was similar.

There is a thread over in the Speakers forum that explains that this series of Sony speakers were designed by one of the U.S.'s highly respected speaker engineers, Paul Agnos, who designed most of the early Polk speakers that most people think highly of, were built in the U.S. using some of the best Seas and Vifa drivers (IIFC) available. I certainly like the sound of my SS-M3 speakers. And, I agree, while I am sure the SS-M9 would sound different, they would be about the same quality as the NS-1000. The highest end of this series of speakers was the SS-M9ed with the super-tweeter on the top. It retailed for $12,500, or so, in the mid-90's. Good stuff, this series of Sony speakers. Probably to never be repeated.
