Hi everyone,
Since this forum is the primary place that I've found for Sony SS-TL5 information, I wanted to document my tweeter replacement project that I performed a few months ago. When I first bought these used off of a man in Pennsylvania, I was hyped but surprised that they sounded pretty lackluster. I ultimately narrowed it down to the original tweeters, with others identifying that they had a tiny hole in each of their rubber diaphragms. With this, I went about seeking replacement tweeters. I noticed there were a few recommended in other AK threads (primarily the Morel MDT30S), but ultimately I decided to go with the LD25X silk dome tweeters by CSS Audio, with a -2db treble adjustment at my receiver to compensate for the sensitivity difference to the Morel.
I want to continue by saying I am amateur modder/DIYer, so some of these decisions may not be strongly based in proper speaker design. Happy to hear feedback.
With the LD25Xs in hand, I designed and 3D printed adapter rings made out of PLA so that I could attach the LD25Xs cleanly to the much larger stock holes, but without drilling any new holes. If anyone goes the same route, the .stl file is available here.
Overall, after the -2db adjustment, I think these tweeters sound absolutely fantastic. My only other reference here are the DCM TimeFrame 600s, although the 600s always win for soundstage width due to rear tweeters they employ, I think these CSS tweeters with the original SS-TL5 parts sound fantastic. They have a level of clarity and detail that I haven't heard before.
I hope this thread can serve as a reference for future owners of SS-TL5s who also have worn out or damaged tweeters. Thanks
