SONY STR-1800 receiver volume

Yikes...not again!
I found this Sony str1800 for free. It is in very good condition. Everything works. It has 2x12watts!….kapow!……that is the ‘problem’. To get any kind of reasonable sound the volume knob has to be at or past 12’o’clock. Can this be true? I can turn the volume to MAX without distortion or pain. Seems not correct. Can a fellow with a str1800 chime in on this and confirm? Awesome…thanks.

Have you attempted accessing the volume control and cleaning it with DeoxIT D5? Clean and work the volume back and forth about 30x with the unit off.
Try the volume again and report your findings.
 
All controls are cleaned with deoxit. I did find a post on the ‘net, mentioning that a couple of resistors in the signal path can cause a lower volume situation. Otherwise it functions quite nicely.
I just need to know if it is normal for this 2x12watt receiver…….anybody on the forum got one? Please report.

Still fiddling with this str1800. Please see picture of scope. Both channels receiving 1khz at 1.5v. The left channel (yellow) is slightly higher in AC voltage output at the dummy load. 1.3v. HOW do I make this go away? The balance control is centered and cleaned. Q501/Q601 have been changed. Ksc1845 now.
The dummy load is 4 ohm/200watt…..about 8vAC gives about 16watts!…..more than its rating! Cant see any clipping….even at maximum voltage. YES.
I have tested resistors…..all seem good.

Advice needed. Thankd.

I measured r702 at 3.51k ohms. R802 was 3.24k ohms. The value in the SM is 3.3k ohms. I will change r702 to a new 3.3k ohm resistor and see if it cures the slight voltage anomaly from the scope.
 
Ok…that helped. I changed all the fusibles. I now have equal output on both channels. Also clear clippping on both at 8.5/8.6 volts AC.
18watts!….time for a party! :beerchug:

I had Chip’s SX-424 here and it needed half volume to play much of anything. Out-of-gas a bit after that. These low watt entry level so units are great for background music, low volume listeners and it helps having sensitive speakers. Chip gave this 424 to a retiring friend and he just loves it. Doubt it ever time for a party at his house.
