Sony STR-6045

I was at an Estate Sale today and found a pair of KLH Model 17s and a Sony STR-6045 receiver came with them. I wanted the speakers but did not really need the receiver. But..., as I told my wife "they all followed me home". The speakers are in near mint condition. They sound great. The receiver I know very little about. It works just great and looks good too. Does anyone have any info on this Sony? Thanks!

I have been looking for one of those for a while, you lucky dog, you! :D I have always liked the Sony stuff but have never been able to find one around here. Nice score! :thmbsp:

I have the 6065 and 7055. Sold a 6055. This is a very smooth sounding series. I'm guessing the 6045 is around 25-30wpc.
The wood case is a bonus. :thmbsp:

It's a Sony option. Mine have wood slats instead of a metal screen though. Did you give the combo a try? KLH's seem to bond well with lower wattage receivers. I have some 32's that came with a Kenwood 4200.

I have the str-6065 too. I find it to be a quite a decent receiver and I'd maybe consider it as my second favorite at the moment.

STR-6045, 1971-3 makes it their second generation receiver, 25wpc with an MRSP of $230. Great little receiver. I especially like these small chassis size Sony receivers from this era, STR-6xxx and -7xxx. Great performance and quality build. You can find the lamps for the dial at your local auto parts store.

Thanks for the info.

Like I said in the first thread I was really interested in the KLHs. I[like most AKers] do not need another receiver or speakers for that matter. So, I thought "I can keep the speakers and sell the receiver". Wrong, I want to keep the Sony too.

hakka26, you are right about the KLHs bonding well with low watt receivers. They sounded great with the Sony but at present I have them hooked up to my Sansui 2000x[39WPC]. I think they may sound better with the Sansui.

The stereo/FM/AM lights work but the dial light are out. Are they easy to replace? They must be very common if they can be found at the auto parts store.

A very nice little receiver...my parents had an earlier, slightly larger version (I can NEVER remember the model number). As B-2 (Glenn) will attest most all of these receivers are keepers...don't sell it! If you keep feeding it (like a cat or dog that follows you home!) it will stay.

Believe all the STR-6xxx & -7xxx receivers are the same in that they have two bulb holders at either end of the dial. Held in by a screw at the top. Just remove the screw and tip back the holder and you'll see the bulb with some aluminized paper backing it for reflection purposes. Is a DE3021 12vdc lamp. Very common. Think I paid $1.69 for a pair for my STR-7055A a few weeks back.

Thanks for the info, Yamaha B-2. I`ll get to it tomorrow after work. Today I`m enjoying a little music and a little brew.

No doubt the KLH sounds better with more power (sadly, my 9090DB is powering another AKer's 23's) but I find them to do really well in comparison.

Glenn, a couple of weeks back I cleaned out two local Radio Shacks of those bulbs (12V 60mA) that you recommended...I have since found a couple of other bulb sources as well as an insulated wire socket for replacement of bare lead bulbs in an insulated wire application...model train technology uses these same bulbs!

Back to Sony!
