Sony STR-6120 on my local Craiglist

I am in shock! My local Craigslist never has anything even remotely interesting and today a rare TOTL Sony shows up. He wants top dollar but claims it is mint and restored also. It is a STR-6120. A few years ago I probably would have snapped this up, not anymore as I have too much gear and need to get rid of some myself.

I don't think that price is terribly out of line. They go for $200-300 on that auction site plus about $50 shipping. They generally come without a wood case. Most things on eBay come with issues included. Restoration by an AK expert would cost $100 for parts, $200-300 labor and another $100 shipping back and forth.

So a restored 6120 conservatively would run $650, possibly $850. The pristine cosmetics should command a premium of $50 to $100 also.

The above posters probably have the ability to do the repairs themselves so I would guess they are not "cheap", just capable. If you can do the work yourself you will still be out around $350 and if you sold it for that you are working for nothing. I have restored/repaired a few items and my wage worked out to about $4/hr. It's not worth it unless I'm doing it for a friend of mine. Making about $4/hr to sell it to some Joe Blow stranger on eBay, that's over.

I love that era Sony. It seems a little high, but it's Craigs, make an offer. That thing would sit forever here at that price, or even at half.

Not mine but as an owner of a near pristine one with case I am not sure I would sell mine for that type of money. Not long ago I turned down a serious offer of $600 without even thinking a second. At that price I might hesitate a couple of seconds before saying no thanks.

By the time I replaced it with anything of similar quality and having it gone through that cash plus a lot more would be gone. So, why bother? When you get to a point with some equipment there is little room to move. I guess I could go to a STR6200. I do not need hundreds of watts, scopes, power meters, etc. None of these actually improve the quality of sound.

Not to mention it's just drop dead gorgeous.

I hear you, around here is not much of a market for vintage gear either, especially if it is not being "given" away.

Sounds like a great place to be a buyer and source for potential deals. Imagine finding a stash of 6120s and doubling your money. Of Marantz 9s, etc.

IMO you are better off with the 6120 (I like the cap coupled sound better). I too have a 6120, purchased from eBay, I have about $380 (plus my labor) sunk into it and its restoration and I wouldn't sell it for $750 or less either. However I am not getting any younger and the day will come when I will have to sell it or spin in my grave as my heirs give it away.

I too seem to universally prefer cap output coupled amps. Maybe a coincidence that the sound is less dry transistor having attributes of a good classic tube signature with just enough of the better transistor qualities. Owners who have had both the 6120 and 6200 seem to prefer the 6200. Having had the STR6065 as God as it is just does not quite have the magic of the 6120 so I suspect the 6200 might not be my cup of tea compared to the 6120 but, talking minutiae here, I suspect.

I too am at the stage where I am making decisions about the future of my units. A really tough time and horrible have to say goodbye to some friends who over the years provided so much comfort.

The only thing you will find around here are boom boxes and cheap all-in-one-units. I can't find words to describe how bad things are and I am done whinging about it. Just spend an hour looking at what is available around here, you will see what I mean and you will never look again.

Maybe in a dream or on my way to heaven (if I am headed there). A stash of 6120's, I'm ROTFLMAO.
