Sony STR-6200F Receiver on eBay

$226. And there is an STR-6065 that is at $204. Good to see these vintage Sonys finally get the respect they deserve.

At $226 it is still a bargain.

Given the market as I see it, the 6200F should run about $300 to $350.

The Monsters can command a premium just for bragging status and the power level. The 6500F should draw around a Yamaha CR2020, a Sansui 9090 or maybe a well maintained Fisher 500c.

The McIntosh receivers are certainly decent but never the company's focus. I suspect this Sony is about equal to a Mc receiver in value - many will argue that however.

The tuner section of this era's Sonys have two problems that I know. First, the tuning inductors can fail internally. Sometimes a tech can rewind them but it takes a special kind of guy to do so. Finding a substitute part would be even better but Sony is no help and it takes a much better engineer than I to reverse engineer the parts.

The second problem is the muting circuit on the 6200f. I've a good local tech and he took my problem as a personal crusade. He didn't want to give it back until he solved it. His report was that it has complicated and interwoven control interfaces.

I'd feel better if I could point to a specific tech with a background of work on these - the go-to-guy for Sony's. While we have some outstanding generalists, there is economy of scale in specialists.

I can not conceive at time when would sell my Sony receivers.

dr*audio (Warren Bendler) and Punker X (Mike Williams, who is Radio X in the banner ads at the bottom of each AK page) both are capable of working the required magic on these tuners. At least they did on my STR-6200F & ST-J75 (dr*audio) and ST-5000FW (Punker X). :thmbsp: I would not hesitate to send them other Sony tuners for similar work/repairs.

As far as actual values, like everything else, they are worth whatever they sell for. As far as replacement value if new, the modern Outlaw sells for $600(?), but its build level cannot approach the vintage Sony receivers. The Magnum Dynalab is about as close as we have today, at $2k+. I understand that Boulder, Ayre and Musical Fidelity are all coming out with Chinese made receivers that will sell in the $2-3K range.

Dr*Audo did a great job on my 5000F restoration - much better than my local guy could have done. (I really do owe him a review!) I guess there is just not a market for Sony repairs large enough to support someone like DeWicki with his McIntosh business.

And you are right about perfect markets pricing everything correctly. However, businessmen are always looking and hoping for imperfections that can work their way. The Sony's are like that - great value for the money with quality competitive with the best but at dirt cheap prices. My price estimates are posited on perfect knowledge for the market participants.

It is the asymmetric knowledge gained from Audiokarma and the Vintage Knob and Tuner Information Center, etc that allows us to acquire great sound for cheap.

I stopped my bidding at $140.00, more than I paid for my 7065A a few months ago.
Was surprised to see the STR-6065 mentioned in this thread (see post #1) at over $200. While a very nice receiver and definitely no slouch, it is in second place compared to the STR-6200F/6120/6060 receivers from Sony. Believe the STR-6065 is based on the ST-5130 tuner, which is a very nice 5-gang unit, while the earlier receivers are based on the ST-5000FW, which was Sony's statement unit.

BTW - I have the STR-7065 SM in .pdf if you would like a copy.

Whitehall could you ventilate and explain.

As a member of the AK fraternity, we have access to more extensive knowledge than the average man on the street, thus enabling us to identify excellent value and acquire it before the average Joe catches on and drives the price up.

I'd add the vinyl engine to TVK and the TIC in the list of excellent sources of info.

That's quite a bit. It is a nice receiver. And, obviously, someone wanted it. But, I'll take the earlier models.

While I've never heard a 7065(A), the schematic shows lots of ICs including for the first stage phono amp.

The front styling does have an appealing symmetry.
