Sony STR-7055 headphone jack

Hi guys, I recently got a vintage Sony STR-7055, mainly to play vinyl. The only thing left I need to buy is a pair of speakers, and I'll be good to go.

Currently, the only pair of speakers I have are a small pair of Altec Lansing computer speakers, they plug into the wall to power them, and then have a headphone jack. I figured I'd just go out and buy an adapter for the jack so I could use them with my receiver for the time being....

The problem is, when plugged into the receiver's headphone jack, sound only comes out of the left speaker. I know it's not a problem with the speakers, they work fine when plugged into my laptop.

Anyways, since I'm not familiar with the equipment, I don't know what this means. Is this normal, am I doing something wrong, are the speakers just not compatible, or is something wrong with the receiver?

My main concern is, assuming something is wrong with the receiver, will the problem carry over when I get new speakers (ones that hook-up to the back), or is it just the headphone jack that has the problem?

The headphone jack is likely dirty or even damaged. Try spinning the plug in the jack a few times to see if it knocks off some of the crud in the jack.

How, exactly, did you adapt the 1/8" stereo plug on the powered speakers to the headphone jack, which I presume is a 1/4" socket on the Sony.

That adapter will need to be a tip-ring-sleeve type to provide for stereo. Also, are you sure there's nothing wrong with the speakers?

Next, does the Sony play ok without any other speakers. I'd suggest you work all the controls and switches. After almost 40 years, they will likely be crudded up (techie term!) and will need cleaning.

It should work but may have some hum on it due to the cheap power supplies used in those powered speakers.

Cheers,

David

I actually just looked at the case for the adapter, and I'm pretty sure I picked up the wrong thing, it says Stereo Male to Mono Female.

I'm guessing I want Stereo to Stereo....?

Boy is my face red. O well, assuming that is the problem, I'm very happy that all I need to do to solve the problem is return this adapter to RadioShack tomorrow and get the right thing.

And thanks for the replies, I might not have even thought to pull the case out of the garbage if it weren't for that.
