Sony STR-V4 Help - Quieter Right Channel

mid70s

Member
I picked up a Sony STR-V4 recently. $80.

All is well except the right channel runs at a lower volume, and is sometimes a little scratchy.

I've removed the cover and lightly blown out all the old dust and done the De-oxit thing.

A-B tests with another receiver show the problem is isolated to this Sony, not speakers, CD player or turntable (Sony PS-X60 I might add). Fuses are original, I think, and are in tact.

Any pros out there have any tips I can use to do some troubleshooting before I take to a shop?

Usually a deox will clean up a lot of lower volume in one or both channels but if your deox treatment didn't seem to work, one other thing that comes to mind is maybe a resistor in that channel went high and out of tolerance. :dunno:

One simple thing you can check, doubt it's the problem. I see two fuses on the board, might be for power to the amps. Take them out and clean them and and sockets, make sure there is a clean tight connection - and they are good. Probably not it but can't hurt. Sure has a substantial power transformer in there, and that big heat sink, kind of a mix of old and new between the amp and the tuner maybe.

Function switch probably needs a disassembled cleaning..

If the fuses were the issue it would occur in both channels.
