I was playing my "new" STR-V7 with JBL-80t's today. What a nice pairing! The V7 is capable of big power and is smooth as well. I listened to them all afternoon while working around the house and the hours went by.:music:

My STR-V7 is an international market version with rear panel voltage selector and a computer style IEC power cord. It appears to have a very low serial number of 30002. North American V7's have a regular power cord, switched and unswitched power plugs, and serial numbers in the 80000 range.

the problem with the STR-V7 is that it cannot be used with efficient speakers. the volume control knob is stepped and with efficient speakers, you never get the knob past the 8:00 position... and the steps are few are far between.. like 3-4dB.

True. IMO, if you are running 95 dB or greater efficiency speakers, tubes are a better choice than this big Sony.

The V7's stepped volume control is not as "front loaded" like the Concept 16.5. The V7 volume can be fined tuned, provided the speakers have an efficiency rating like the L-80t.
 
Doesn't that V7 have the -20dB attenuator switch on it? I remember that many of the Sony's of that era did. Primarily intended as a 'quick mute' sort of feature, it would work in this case to help with the high efficiency speaker.

IMHO, this line was Sony's best of all the mid-70s stuff they produced.

Glad to see one is still kicking butt around here.

no. the str-v7 does not have a -20dB attenuator... I have a str-v7 and sorely wished it had one... with all that power it would have been a no-brainer... but hey, i was off that day...
