Sony TA-E80ES Preamp Noise Issue

vincei

aka MasterControlMedia
Hi all! I was wonderding if someone can help or give advise.

I have a Sony TA-E80ES preamp and noticed it was fairly "noisy". I have it hooked up to a N80ES power amp, which is DEAD silent with no input. As soon as I hit the output button on the TA-E80ES preamp, there is faint hiss at min volume, if I put the volume on the preamp at max, there is a slight humm and buzz. The preamp has no input source connected to it. Could this mean I need a recap or might it be a power issue? Like I said my N80ES is dead silent and thought the E80ES preamp was just as quiet. I used to own this preamp when it first came out and remember it being dead silent as well.

Any advice is appreciated!

Could be a ground loop problem. Both components have three prong plugs. Put a cheater plug between the pre-amp's plug and the outlet and listen again.

No promises but it is a cheap and easy test.

Someone here has done a recap recently on the TA-E80ES and posted same, including some pic's. Do a search in the Vintage Forum and you'll find. The TA-E77ES has a problem with hum, but believe that the TA-E80ES is a different design. You might also check with AK members Restorer-John and/or Axel on this. They will surely know more details.

Thanks for the input. I may recap the main power supply and the audio output caps. I was planning on replacing the output caps with some Nichicon non polarized electrolytics, is this a good idea, or should I stick with polarized ones? I would put in some Solen or Auricaps or similar, but I need 47uf, so they may not fit due to size. :scratch2:

If were me, I'd go ahead with Black Gate caps from Percy Audio in the audio section. Nichicon Great Supply/Gold or Panasonic FM/FC elsewhere should be good. Think it may already have Great Supply in there for the main filter caps. Can't do much better.

Good idea for the Black Gates in the audio path, I have to track some down.

As far as the power supply, it uses Nichicon Great Supply, 10000UF, but figured fresh GoldTunes (easy to get around here) may be a good idea as the preamp is about 15 years old. Where can I get those BG's?

He has BG, Nichicon and a few others. Google.

Just to clarify, should I use BiPolar (NP) for the audio path caps or stick with polarized?

If the cap is inline, (both legs connected to the signal) use non-polar (N or NX).

If the cap has one leg on the signal and the other connected to ground, then stick with a polarized. These are just filter/bypass caps and not really considered signal path.
