Turns out it's a very nice amp. Smooth, with an air of authority that borders on the smug. Has what I've come to think of as that can-do MOSFET sound. Floated Rachael Yamagata nicely in the air between two Ohm Walsh speakers; she didn't complain.
Has a single pair of Toshiba 2SJ201 / 2SK1530 per channel.
Mine runs cool, cooler than my other MOSFET amps. Most owners of the 707/808 mention that theirs run hot.
Has that interesting SOURCE DIRECT function with the ability to bypass everything but the volume control.
Built very solidly, but with none of the anti-vibration gewgaws of the 808.
Compared to 707/808: gives up the pre-out switch, the MC phono load selector switch, the direct-input selector, and one of the three tape inputs. Probably also the MOSFET driver stage.
THD spec is about twice the 707/808's.
IM spec is about 50% greater.
I'd say it's a nice frugal choice for someone who wants to step up from, say, a Hitachi HA-7700, keeping in mind that there weren't too many MOSFET integrateds to step up from. Well, there was the Marantz PM94, but time hasn't been good to that one.
It's a bit of a sleeper. You might just get one for a reasonable price.
