It's probably easier to put a new movement into the same housing w/display card, attach the original needle. Fine detail work but then you have all the original components as far as mounting, display, needle etc. A lot of movements mount very similarly, so finding one that drops into your meter housing may not be that difficult (not sure, I haven't developed sources for those parts yet but in the one example I know of it was fairly straightforward to match the movement mounting).
Then you add the correct value resistor to ensure the meter matches the original for same displayed level for a given input voltage.
The other variable is drive current, for instance 10mA movement vs. 100mA. One will give you much more dynamic movement on transients than the other, even if they match perfectly on static input signals after the resistor adjustment.
