Sony TC-558 Maintenance Advice

Hello all,

I’m new to reel to reel and have a Sony TC-558.

So far I’ve cleaned the heads and tape path and I’m going to install a new counter belt. I know I have to do the basic clean and lube but is there anything else that I should do like oiling like the motors, etc?

Any known issues with the TC-558 that I should look for?

That's a complicated deck. Do a Google search; you'll find lots of threads, as the spinning head-block is generally needing service at this point.

I just spent a few hours cleaning and relubing yesterday. There was a lot of dried out lube in this deck. I also replaced the counter belt.

Some prerecorded tapes are arriving soon so I'll be able to test it out.
