Sony Turntable...what is this thing?

Helps keep the arm balanced on a horizontal plane, if the table is not set up 100% level.

No need to rotate it.

It is called a lateral weight. It is not critical where it is, but I would have it hang down about mid-way on the shaft or where ever it is right now, just hanging down.

The purpose of this lateral weight is to balance the arm to conteract the weight of the portion of the arm located on the right side of the pivot to needle line. This weight can slide on the small horizontal rod.

The way to adjust this lateral weight is to balance the arm (0 VTF), set the anti skating to 0, and lift the rear of the turntable. Without this weight, the arm would shift to the left by a few degrees. You must adjust the lateral position of the weight such that the needle to pivot line is squared with the front of the turntable. For an example of the procedure, consult the manual for the Yamaha YP-700, page 5, fig 10 and 11. The manual is on Vinyl Engine.

In many arms, this weight is more a ornament than a true lateral weight because the anti skating is not exactly zeroed when the anti skating dial is set at 0, and the wires passing through the lower bearing exert a torque to the arm.

Where this weight is Permanently fixed and adjustability is extremely limited ( ie; not adjustable like a more advanced and/or removable version)- just let it hang straight down.
