sound diffs in cd players

These days the differences between decent inexpensive players and top notch ones is smaller than it has ever been. There are differences but they are not of the night and day variety. I have a Dynaco(Panor) CDV-2 tube ouput CD player that I bought new in the mid 90's and still love. If you see one of these or its brethren the CDV-1 or the CDV-Pro available used, snap it up. You won't be sorry. Good luck finding one though because they didn't sell well (that's why they are pretty much out of business. "Dynaco"'s web site today is a store selling other brands of AV gear) and the people that bought them loved them and hardly ever sell them. Its a one of the examples of a terrific product that was kind of between market segments. Too expensive for the CC sort of store and not expensive enough attract much attention from the audiophile press. I have their CD player and tube preamp and like them both a lot.
 
anything in the under $300 range good? my changer is having issues but it will act up then stop! so I'm waiting for it to die and will be looking for a replacement when it does

But what i can say is that im using the Toshiba ( unmodded) 3950 in my system and it doesnt sound like a giant killer to me, or at least my system as a whole doesnt.

A lot can depend on the rest of the system, and very important, the speakers. Many, (most?) of us are running vintage gears ans a lot of vintage gear, including the speakers, are in need of new E caps, and in some cases other tuning. Old coroded wire can take away also, (trust me, I know :stupid: )

I have only done one comarason between my 1980 Fisher, and a few years old Sony DVD. The Sony won, but it was marginal. I'm getting ready for a shoot off between those 2, and several other units I have picked up cheap at thrifts. Some look to be pretty decent, and sound decent, but unless you can switch back and forth on the same system, it means nothing... :naughty:

Like speakers, let your ears do the deciding... I think comments made about build quality of the transport, and initial laser circuits are probably valid, but after that it's all about sound quality of the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), and the preamp audio sections, and the listeners ears. :scratch2:

The Harman Kardon FL 8385 sounds quite good and is around $200. I don't own one but I have used one in a system I put together for a friend and was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality.
