Sound Lab A3's - Houston - $750-1000 - RUN!

I thought about flying in, grabbing these and driving a rental van home. I figured if I got them for $750 I'd have another $500-600 in getting them which is still a scroe!!! I'll leave it to someone else to appreciate the beauty of stats.... especially these stats!

That's a crazy stupid deal right there. Money aside, those things are claimed to be absolutely fantastic. Definitely a pair worthy of building your coffin system around...

Soundlabs are not very reliable, but can also say these do not sound very good.

I listened to a pair at the Chicago audio show two years ago... Blechhhh!

You can put lipstick on a pig and at the end of the day it is still a pig.

Maybe the room and amplification was not right but I can say my JansZen Z412HP's with tube amplification was far better than what I heard at the show.

I might agree with the reliability of the early A3's, but they can be upgraded pretty easily, if not inexpensively by Dr. West himself. As for the sound quality, I'm not going to discount your opinion, but I think the "general" consensus is that they sound pretty damn good!

botrytis: as I stated... maybe the room and amplification was not right leading to the performance I heard, for a speaker of this stature I was disappointed . But at the price these are being purchased at they are a bargain!

While you have every right to your opinion, I've personally listened to A3s extensively, and have owned Dynastats for a couple decades now, and I think your appraisal is short sighted, if not completely off base.
First of all, where do you get your impression that SoundLabs are unreliable from? My experience with them has indicated nothing of the sort, and I don't recall reading anything like that on the web either... so what's with that jab?
As far as the sound you heard at some show, I've heard several otherwise quality products sound less than stellar in poorly set up systems, but I tend to withhold judgment until I'm pretty sure there weren't other set up issues.
I'm pretty sure a well set up pair of A3s would best my Crown ES224s, and I've compared my Crowns to most of the JansZen cow catchers, and never felt the itch to change. Actually, I can say with confidence, that my Dynastats are more reliable & IMO much better over all speakers than any vintage JansZen, and I'd trade them for a good pair of A3s any day.

I can't remember if I've ever heard them, but I have seen them sit for sale at what I thought were surprisingly low prices before. I know that doesn't mean much - big speakers are a tough sell these days - but I don't think these qualify for a "run" at the asking price. The fact that nobody has bid on them so far kind of backs that up. No matter how good they are, I bet they sound awful crammed into a corners of a small reflective room like they are in that eBay photo.

Looks like they ended the first time with no bids and the second time where was a bid but someone snagged them with buy it now. Interesting. Was it one of you guys? And if so, can I come hear them? I was tempted to buy them just so I could hear them and then sell them. I don't think I really have a place for speakers that big.
