sound less full from 4 speakers than with 2 ?? help!

I understand to best utilize 4 speakers in a room you need more than two channel stereo from this great thread.

Will a Sansui model QS-500 Quadphonic Synthesizer and Rear Channel Amplifier provide enough difference from a two channel stereo source when used in the synthisizer mode for the two rear channels?

I have a QS-500 but it has a bad channel and I can not try it out now.

Others here will know more about what it does, but if I had one, I'd sure be wanting to get that fixed and try it out! :thmbsp:

Being an old school gentleman I would certainly move anything the lovely lady asked me to move :yes:

Keep up with the good audio "educational" links guys, my bookmarks are overflowing but I love reading and learning more about the science and voodoo behind this whole audio thing.

The only thing I can really contribute is in regard to the 4x12 guitar cabinet comments. A 4x12, or 2 4x12's stacked on top of each other, produces a very narrow "beam" of sound in my experience. If my monitors or the montior mix was bad I normally had to put myself somewhat in that beam to hear myself... hence my rolling off above the mids hearing. There is something very cool about an E minor moving enough air to make your clothing flap though :thmbsp:

At a big show that row of stacks on the backline is just there for show. They have an amp driving one of the 4x12's, with one 12" speaker miked and sent to the PA... or they have a much smaller amp behind the backline miked and sent to the PA... Tom Scholz from Boston and Ty Tabor from King's X are two examples of the "hidden amp" guys. Tom Scholz's live sound came from a little tube amp of his own design that I believe was based on a Marshall... and a rack of effects he designed as well. Ty Tabor used a SOLID STATE Lab Series L5 I believe. As does B.B. King.

Now WAY back in the day (just kidding!)... that backline was LIVE! I wasn't around in the pre-PA days... but my friends that were told me that live sound was pretty bad back then :scratch2:

Stacking like the "Big Boys" would mean having stacks and stacks of speakers, but only one pair connected, then?

We're CRUSHED! :p:

Yes, live sound in the "Wall of Sound" days DID rather suck. The pros have it down much better now that the science has moved in.... :yes:
 
There was a fellow who tried to stack two pairs of Small Advent (4 ohm) speakers. He was running a two ohm load with them in parallel. He could not get much out of them. I suggested he run them in series and problem solved, they sounded great with the amp at a 8 ohm load.

I don't know why the B&Ws don't sound good together. Guess you'll have to turn them in for two pairs of Large Advents.

Actually you'd have one pair connected, miked, and run through a huge PA system...

I wonder what sorts of things I'd try if I had unlimited funds :scratch2:
