Sound of Music

To night it was broadcast on Turner Classic Movies. As much as I love the movie and Julie Andrews I am always disappointed. My Laser disc of the movie had the most beautiful sound track with the use of all 3 front channels. But unfortunately with the popularity of DVD an Home Theatre, the sound was remixed so basically all the voices and singing only came from the center channel. What a disappointment for me and all of you who have never heard the presentation with the full 3 front channels being presented as the movie was sown in movie theaters. I am afraid this way of mixing for home theaters has become a very disappointing norm.

They did the same bullshit to My Fair Lady. However some videos of the 20th Century Fox multi channel movies still use all the front channels for dialogue and it often moves across the screen with the characters. For instance Demetrius and the Gladiators, Cleopatra and The Agony and the Ecstasy.

After Sound of music they showed Victor Victoria again with Julie Andrews. A comical tour de force for sure. But the sound hadn't been compromised and had the full three channel sound for the me to enjoy. Why could they do that for Sound of Music? I will have to get out my Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur and see how they are presented. Star Wars and Star Trek might be fun to test also.

Most of the time if there is a movie soundtrack I like I will get the stereo recording. So that is the mix that I know. The multichannel mix on my copy of said movie is more than likely to be some sort of abomination/modified version of that mix.
