"Sound" R-700?

Somebody on my local Craigslist is selling a nice looking little receiver with the brand name Sound, model R-700. Made by Nippon Sound Company. Wood case. Really pretty. Elements of it seem like similar vintage HK or Rotel.

Anybody know who sold this brand at the time? Some store brand? Was this manufacturer an O.E supplier at the time? Like Hitachi or Fostex?

Just curious.

That Yamaha was my first thought, as well.

A shot of the rear panel would have been helpful.
 
Nippon is known for quality components. I would hope they put their good components inside and take the chance if it wasn't too costly.

I'm not disputing your post but I'm wondering if your confusing "Nippon Sound Co." with "Nippon Victor Corporation" (Nivico) which was a subsidiary of JVC (Japan Victor Corporation)
 
This receiver seemed about the same vintage as the old Nivico stuff but definitely Nippon Sound Company. There's a Sound R-200 on the Bay with lots of pictures clearly showing Nippon Sound Company LTD on it's ID plate on the back. Not the only Sound receiver I've found on the net. But not many.
 
I get a Sansui vibe as well, like the 2000. I would say it is about that time frame too based on the styling. The thing is, there is plenty of well made audio gear that works well and sounds good, but have no brand recognition. These are bargains for someone just getting into the hobby, but you won't make any money off of it in a flip. Still an opportunity though.
 
Somebody must have thought it was worth a try for that money. It was gone in a matter of hours, as I figured it would be. I'm mostly trying to satisfy my curiosity about it's background. Maybe for future reference if someone searches for info here someday. It did look like a pretty well made little piece.

Hi, @Kyocerafan I actually bought it. The guy who sold it is a solid Craigslister (I've bought from him before); he checks all his gear carefully, and repairs/recaps where necessary. It was flipped from Value Village, you can still see some of the red marker they use to scrawl on wooden receiver cases (sigh!). Heavy, solid little guy, very similar in build quality and design to Sansui. It's now powering a pair of Klipsch La Scala Industrials at work and sounds quite nice.

I have a Nippon Sound R-200 receiver that I used in my office for some time. It's a nice little basic unit. Very similar components (controls, dial, etc.) under the Monacor brand show up on-line, and they were sourced from Nivico which would imply a JVC connection at some point, but that's just a guess.I assumed these were carried at appliance and furniture stores that sold console stereos, maybe catalog showrooms at the time as well?
