Nocturnal transmissions
Was given a table saw yesterday. :banana: Needs brushes, and motor is arcing, but hopefully replacing the brushes will cure that.

I'm going to build some amp fans out of wood and computer fans, and maybe some mesh metal. The kind that the metal ADS grills are made of.

With luck, I'll find a damaged ADS grill on eBay, or some similar perforated metal.

I'll finish them off with either a nice wood frame stained and polyurethaned, or in a nice satin black finish. I may even gold leaf a brand name on them (Yamaha, Sansui, ect) or put Audio Karma's logo on it.

So, I'll need a source for electric fans and the metal mesh. I found a source already for a cheap adjustable wall wart.

I'll build one for Audio Karma, and have Lovinvinyl set up an auction to benefit AK, if he'd do so.

But first I need to fix the saw, and locate the parts.

If you have any sources for really cheaply-priced, quality fans, or that mesh metal, please let me know. Also, if you have any insight on that arcing fan, as to what may be the cause of it arcing (hopefully just the brushes), that'd be swell. :thmbsp:

All Electronics and/or Ocean State oughta have closeout/bargain "Muffin" (boxer) fans.

My local hardware store has perforated metal (aluminum) like the stuff they used to put over ventilation ducts for "decoration" -- not all that different than the stuff on the old Fisher tube amps. I have a big ol' sheet of it in the garage I bought for a project that hasn't happened.
 
newegg.com has the cheapest computer parts, and the customer service is A+++. wicked fast shipping, not kidding, its at your door in a couple of days. tigerdirect.com is excellent as well....
 
Plenum returns in drop ceilings are often white perf metal. The holes are about 4mm across and the tiles are 2 feet square. Don't know the prices, but you oughta be able to buy them at the Home Cheapo. Jameco is often a good source for 'stuff' as well.

I bought a ton of perf metal for a project at a nuclear power plant a few years ago from McMaster.

Grainger also should have some.
 
What's the size your looking for? If it's a normal PC computer fan I might be able to get you all you want for the cost of shipping. The fans have the protective aluminum grill on the outside of the case that attaches with 4 screws . If this is what your talking about let me know and I will check w/our Technical manager. We probably junk 200 PC's a month for one reason or another. Mostly now days because of the state mandated obsolescence plan.

MP jones, MECI, Hosfelt... Do a search on surplus electroncis for more.

Run 2 fans in series and they get real quiet because they run at half speed.

I think Home Depot has some expanded metal. Can't remember where in the store.

The search and gather will start Monday then. Shouldn't be too much of a search since we warehouse all our PC's just a mile from where my office is.

Hi. If you're stuck for brushes, try getting ones that are a bit oversize and file them down; brush material (graphite I think) is soft enough for this. Try to save the springs from the old brushes and finish the ends of the brushes flat. It's a good idea to clean the comutator with fine enery paper, finishing with very fine along the faces at 90 degrees to direction of rotation; as the motor runs this helps cut the brush ends to fit the curve of the comutator. If the motor still sparks a lot, it could be graphite build up between the contacts on the comutator shorting them out. Thorough cleaning should cure this unless the turns are shorted within the comutator winding. Good Luck, Jim.
 
Home Depot has the perf metal, likely to be anywhere depending on the store. However, when I force ventilated the stereo cabinet I got an 80mm 12 volt fan at Mouser and a grill cover with foam filters, eliminated the need for perf metal. Have about a half dozen grills from computer fans in the parts box.
