Good Morning,

My spare Headshell arrived for the Denon DP-300F. It came from a fellow AKer and is like new with leads.

I will be testing different cartridges now with the Denon, and posting the results.

Thanks,
JOhn.:music:

Remember if those are new cartridge wires they will need time to burn in.

Hi, Thanks, did not know that. Yes they are the new wires that come in the cartridge kit, with the screws,Etc.

What actually burns in? The chemicals on the connections? I did not think of cleaning anything off.

I can play some tunes tomorrow, after my wife is at work. Today is her Day!

Thanks,
John.:music:

I've found the best approach is to weigh the stock headshell so you know which way you want to go with an extra. If you will be mounting a light cartridge, maybe a good cast magnesium would do. If mounting a heavy cartridge, I go with the lightest shell I can get. There are many varieties available on the 'Bay :)

Yeah but, with true stock replacement Pioneer headshell, I'll know exactly how to align it without use of a protractor and the thought of stylus touching paper or the rubber mat. I know how far the stylus tip has to be from the opposite edge with a stock duplicate, so then all the work's in squaring the cart up.

Most stylus are set-up with a mounting distance from the back of the headshell mounting collar including the rubber washer. Once you know that distance, it does not matter what headshell as they are almost all long enough to accommodate the cartridge of choice. For my TTs that distance is either 52mm or 48mm depending on TT. I think your Pioneer is another number? But, whatever it is, it's always the same :)

Wonder who I could get a spare Pioneer headshell from...
Unfortunately Pioneer used it's own proprietary headshells not compatible with anything else and hard to find. All I can say is look on ebay for either a headshell or another Pioneer straight arm turntable, from which you can take it.

OK, John, have fun tomorrow! I'm really interested in how the AT-440 works on the Denon. What tracking force is recommended for the AT? 1.5 grams? That will be interesting to see how the Denon arm handles that. Still love mine, but I haven't changed the cartridge yet.

Hi John,

It recommends 1.4 grams, so I have it set that way for now. I still have the original headshell with the MM cart. I also have the M97Xe Shure in the wings to test.

Thanks,
Happy New Year!

56mm for my 730, but like hakaplan said, Pioneer tonearms use a proprietary headshell mounting that means only Pioneer headshells can be used. Besides, I'm not sure if I can do much better cart-wise than my V15RS without spending a truckload. I'm more now wondering if there's any aftermarket styli as good or actually better than the stock Shure one that doesn't require a bank loan to get.

OK, the AT440MLa sounds very clean and clear, not Bright as I thought it was going too. I have it set at 1.4 grams as the Manufacturer Suggests.

I played some Horowitz piano concerts and it sounded great to ME. Again my ears are older and clogged with 58 yrs of crap! So, there you go, I give it a clean bill of health.

Thanks,

John.:music:
