"Spares or Repairs" SX-1010... Help!

Hi all,

I have taken a chance on an SX-1010 listed as spare or repair. Big mistake!

It's missing both of the amplifier boards. They have been replaced by new, potentially homemade, boards with only two output transistors instead of four.

The protection board is missing completely.

I don't even know where to start! Any advice apart from destroy it?

Sell the remaining parts on ebay, or become a subscribing member ($25 per year) here on AK (click on subscribe in the upper header) and list them on Barter Town. BT is a separate, subscriber only forum where members buy, sell and trade with each other.

I'm sure there are people out there looking for knobs, switches, xformer, case, etc. for the 1010.

Hope you didn't pay much.

If it's cosmetically presentable, I'd look into a restomod. It'd be a bit of a project, but even TPA-3255 modules from AliExpress wouldn't set you back much and would shake the plaster loose from your walls like no Pioneer receiver ever before :)

Note that a TI TPA-3255 has single supply operation, max 53.5V supply and floating outputs. In other words you can't tie the grounds on both output channels together as they are currently wired on the sx-1010.

As to why they replaced the original amp board with a different amp, lots of possibilities.
1) the amp boards were damaged beyond repair
2) someone did not know how to troubleshoot.
3) someone liked a MOSFET amp better. It's possible that the new amp boards use double die exicon 250W MOSFETs.

Does it work?

I have managed to get it working and it sounds good (through my expendable JVC test speakers at least).
The protection circuit is completely bypassed, which I'm not completely comfortable with. The AWM-062 board is missing completely!

I'm going to rebuild this beast. The rest of it is in good condition so I'll wait for doner parts to come up and take my time.
