Speaker advice. Please help!!

I think you must be referring to the EPI T/E 70 speakers. If so they are probably pretty good. I have never heard that particular model but EPI made some good speakers.

Do they look like this?

If the guy has a lot of used speakers for sale in his area as he said, there's bound to be a few brick-and-mortar audio stores within driving distance. I've driven four hours one way to spend time doing this. I've bought new bookshelf speakers on-line without hearing them and returned them when they didn't work out for me. They're usually small and light enough to require a reasonable return shipping charge. If you want to roll the dice and buy used speakers on FB, CL, or eB unheard and unseen, that's everyone's choice. But I wouldn't recommend it unless there's a good return policy included. I'm not the type who accumulates gear I'll never use and isn't worth my time and effort to try to sell.

I guess it just depends on one's location, I know of a couple brick & motor audio stores within a couple hours drive, but four hours in a vehicle is a big turn off for me..

Within the OPs list I agree with the dyna a25 recommends..
Although the mission 701 might be interesting, but they look more modern than vintage to my eye..

There’s a pair of Wharfedale Dovedail III’s worth looking at near you. And if you’re willing to take a deep dive for $900 a pair of AR3’s that are considered Acoustic Research’s best model and highly sought after

I really enjoy my KLH Model 17's. Also my Advent A4's. I use a Pioneer SX-880 & SX-535 to drive them.

I remember when AR 3s could be had for under fifty bucks, so 900 seems high (if they were 1s with the Western Electric 8 inch full range tweeter that sells for much more than that in Asia, that would be another thing). But leaving that aside, I don't think they would sound good with the poster's receiver. They need real muscle to get them sounding alive. Just my opinion.

If you don’t mind a floor speaker, Klipsch KG4’s will be excellent and run between $300-$400, they sold a lot of those so they pop up often too on marketplace

Can’t go wrong with KG4’s plus they will rock the house if you upgrade to a more powerful amp don’t overlook their little cousin RP 600M II impressive bookshelf speakers that get a lot of love

To get good bass get at least an eight inch woofer speaker system.

I have a wide varity of speakers and have owned most of the mid level "classics"

Some are too bright, I flip them. The ones I have stuck with are any Bozak, AR 2ax, JBL 4301/L19. Have kept some Pioneer CS99a because they sound so good at low volume and are actually the loudest of my systems for those times lol. but they can scream at you. Those types of speakers respond well to loudness buttons and tone controls. Makes them useful for older ill recorded vinyl. Heck I have had the treble at 9 pm many times on crap recordings. Rant off LOL

I normally run my tone controls straight up or use the tone defeat. start there and most of the time I don't use tone controls.

Hell while I am ranting. The softer the room the better. My junky rooms have like zero reflection. When serious I put a blanket on the flat screen between the speaker location.I think I could make bad speakers sound good in my two car garage family room. Wall to wall carpet, big throw rug on top of that, suspended acoustic ceiling, walls covered in irregular shapes. Drapes on glass, the goal to me is no reflections.

I like speakers that drop off at 15k. I think that adds a deepnest and warmth to the sound of all frequencies. Screw that to 20 22 24 k hz high end spec. Give a nice smooth level response spec of 40 to 15 hz as a generalization.

My best speakers are a contest between Bozak Symphonies and DMS 5500. The biggest surprise and likely my retirment speakers when I get put in a smaller place will be the JBL 4301b the studio version of the L19. An amazing little speaker IMO.
Get a nice 50 plus watt receiver or amp and your gold. Buy good vinyl and keep a low hour stylus on your table.
