I'm trying to design a speaker cabinet for my mid range speaker driver units, to be incorporated into a 3-way speaker.
To stop the bass speaker from influencing the mid, I'm going to have them housed in their own cabinets, which will be attached to each other yet be separate.
I've used a couple of sealed box calulators, using the specifications for each driver as supplied by the manufacturer.
The bass speaker gets a reasonable suggested design, at around 110L volume, but the mid gets a very small volume of 3.5L suggested.
This is not a great deal larger than the speaker itself, but it must be related to / comforming with the specs of the speaker, otherwise both of them wouldn't be suggesting such a small cabinet.
Could it be that the mid driver really does need such a small cabinet to sound good..?
I'm trying to build a pair of speakers inspired by my old B&W DM-6's, the time-aligned pregnant droid speaker from 1976.
They had a mid driver the same diameter as the one I'm using, but the DM-6's mid cabinet was the same width & depth (less the amount for time alignment) as the bass cabinet below (it was essentially one large cabinet separated internally to provide 3 independant spaces for the 3 speaker drivers).
They didn't have a really small cabinet volume for the mid, so why am I getting such suggestions?
I'm using a Monacor SPH-135KEP bass-mid driver.
Are the box calculators only meant for bass cabinets? So, for mids, I can use any dimensions?
I know the Golden Ratio aspect is to avoid standing waves, but maybe that only relates to bass drivers..?
The fact that I'm getting such small dimensions suggested makes me wonder if the speakers' specs are telling the calulators that they really do need to be in a tight box, that they really do need to be held tightly by the small volume of air behind, in order to sound good.
Or do the calulators only relate to bass speakers / cabinets, and for mids & tweeters you can choose any dimensions you like..?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
