Speaker cables - I share this at great peril

Good day, everyone.

Recently, a friend of mine here on AK offered to make me a set of speaker cables, and I said, "Sure, I've always used old extension cords, lamp wire, etc, and would enjoy actually owning a good set of Cat5 cables".
Aside from a short detour, they arrived fairly quick. They wouldn't fit my Allo Volt D, so I swapped out that lovely little Class D for a MOSFET Adcom 5200 (50 wpc) I had.

The speakers are Alpair 10P's in Frugalhorn cabinets. I am very familiar with these, even have a backup pair of drivers.

From the first note, I heard it. Stunning focus. The analogy that came to mind was the old "Sharpness" knob on CRT's from back in the day. It's like everything just got dialed in nice and specific.

Van Halen II, an album I know front, back and inside-out, revealed off-mic grunts, studio farts, bonhomie noises, and what felt like a peephole into Sunset Studios.

Uncanny is NOT the word. The shrieky-shouty nature of full range speakers was improved during busy passages in orchestral stuff. Everything improved, and not by a little.

As I run on far too often, I will simply say that I figured copper wire was copper wire. I was dead wrong. Admittedly, I had never ONCE experimented with better speaker wire.

As I stated to the creator (who I've ordered 2 more sets from at a more-than-reasonable cost) I cannot go back. I have also spared any comparisons to super-expensive speaker cables, though I know a few who have made some pretty shocking claims about just how good these are. They may chime in.

This isn't a sales pitch. This isn't to convince the horde. It is simply sharing my experience. Maybe it helps you, maybe not. I hope it leads you to better sound.

If anyone wishes to know who these cables are made by, PM me. The guy isn't drumming up business, but willing to crank out some more. The price? I think most of us will find it more than agreeable. There's lots of time that goes into these, and the laborer is worthy of his hire.

They're also very darn good looking cables. My thinking on speaker wire?? "Retain the good, keep the bad out." I cannot explain it any better than this.

Happy listening!!

Trust your ears. I didn't make these, but have made some that look a while lot like those.

I've read just swapping out cables cleans the contact surfaces and many times that can make a audible difference.

^+1^
Sometimes I wonder if this is the reason most folks swear by high dollar cables they've bought. In some cases maybe their original cable connections just needed a little TLC.
Either way, it's still awesome that you would share this info with us and I'm glad it worked out for you. The wires pictured do look great!

Very interesting! I have an identical, but shorter, pair! I'm sure I purchased them on eBay, but I'd need to look at my purchase history to see who the seller was.

I really don’t want to get into the speaker wire wars. Maybe it was due to dirty connections, maybe it is in my head. I have no idea, but I too have noticed an improvement with the Cat5. Probably the only wire that I’ve used and actually heard a difference in sound quality. Just my opinion. Don’t shoot.

Different types of copper, different strand counts/configurations, even small details can affect the sound if your system is revealing enough. And if you're actually listening for it.
I don't personally think a speaker cable should alter anything except how much of everything you hear. Better cables should only give you more, by virtue of better conductivity.

I had typed up a long response to this idea of using Cat5 cable for speaker cables, but once again AK and their web problems plagued me.

Is anyone else having problems, all day long it was 505 server problems, now I try to post and I have to refresh the browser to make sure it isn't a bot. and then everything I had tried to post is gone.

I have been having the same issues with the site. As far as the Cat5 please let us know your opinion when you try them.

Anyhow the gist was that I wouldn't have thought of cat5 cable as being a great cable as it doesn't have much copper as halve or more is insulation. But I am not closed minded and have plenty of cable and RCA ends so I will give it a shot.
They have been around forever.

I'm sure this is true, have felt that way for years.
This is something far different.
Curious as to the LENGTH/GAUGE of those speaker wires, og. And what you had BEFORE.

Q
I had plain old bulk Monster Cable, i think. Nothing special.
Do you still have your old cables?

It would be interesting to see the resistance and capacitance differences between new and old
Sure, i'm all about science.
But right now, I'm not holding a beaker or a flask. I'm just enjoying low-level detail I've not heard before, and something entirely new.
I typed it, then deleted it, not going to get sucked in :)
That sounds quite mature of you. Thanks for playing, and best wishes.

Ken, I have NEVER believed speaker cable could matter this greatly.

As I tried to say before, I guess it keeps the good stuff in, and the bad stuff out??

For the record, I am as shocked as anyone.

All the possibilities you guys bring up, but nobody thought this could be important?

Everything makes a difference. Some differences matter more than others. Some are good in one set of circumstances, yet bad in others.

I'm glad this one turned out good for you James.

I'm a pleb. I bought a big commercial roll of multi-stranded, Belden 12-gauge lampcord a long time ago. Been using it for all the speakers — car, and home.

A large metal square roll of Belden.

Like this kinda roll, but blue color. Good stuff, it lasts forever.
