Hey guys,

Glad to say hello to everyone. Newbie here and hoping to be a +1 but, for my first post, I ask for your knowledge and experience.

I already own a 110z McIntosh and a M4000 Luxman amp. Just bought a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 and in the search of a secondary pair of speakers.

As muy musical preferences tend to heavy metal, hard rock and so, I started a quest to build my own.

Large full range have been my choice (Philips AD 9710/M8 Alnico) and it was supposed to be it but then, I found this German guy who built a modular speaker with different drivers (modular = each driver in its own cabinet).

What this guy did was a config of 2 8” full range, 2 6,5” full range, 1 12” woofer and 1 2” external super tweeter. I’ve never worked with full range speakers or this kind of config and I’ll really appreciate your comments, experience or any possible advice. Is this possible or I just go and find something available in the market?

Sure he wasn't Japanese?

There are many examples of speakers manufacturers going with making their modulation more apparent and part of the aesthetics of the speaker over the years.
Go for it!

I’m going for that for sure. BTW, any comments about using a horn, 2 6,5” mid full range, 2 8” large full range and a 12” woofer?

Every cabinet enclosure will be foamed and following a specific design, already proved, according to milimetric dimensions and recommended for each driver. Will you add anything else to ensure quality sound?
 
L-pads can be used to match drivers' sensitivites.
Variable are OK, especially for tuning. Adjust to desired levels, measure Rseries & Rparallel, and replace with good fixed resistors.
Alternatively, use an on-line L-pad calculator to pick Rseries and Rparallel values for the desired level of padding given the impedance of each driver in question.
 
I would rather have an outstanding two way or three way design any day of the week. The drivers will cost more , but crossover issues will be magnitudes smaller. I'd gladly give up 10 cycles on the bottomed a couple 1000 cycles on the top if it meant the design could be an out standing 2 way. Multiple driver designs should be left to experts unless you have a fft analyzer and test your designs out doors with out harassing the neighbors. Just lay the speakers on their backs facing upwards with the test mic 20 feet over head. Multiple drivers with complex crossovers give amplifiers indigestion and are just about as annoying to the human ear. Unless you are willing to use dedicated amplifiers and electronic crossovers using passive crossovers not specifically designed for each driver is just a guess in a hit and/or miss proposition.
