Speaker Cutting In/Out and Volume Increases

Hi all,

I disassembled the head module on one of my KEF 105.2 speakers to try and replace an LED that glows at various wattage readings and helps you position the speakers. I decided I'll try to clean the connections (there's a small PCB in there) instead. Used Deoxit F5 and D5; sprayed visible front, and invisible rear, behind the PCB. Not sure what's back there but as it was Deoxit I thought it'd be okay.

Hooked them back up and was fine. Then that speaker cut out until I upped the volume on the preamp. Sound returns. Has done for a few times. Distortion in the tweeter and and nothing in the mid.

Any ideas what's happening there?

I have a similar problem on my Kef 105.2. with cutting in and out at will but I checked and all connections are intact. I'm wondering if it might be a faulty component in the crossover? Does anyone know if a multimeter might be able to determine where the shorting is?
 
Need more info.

Is it one or both speakers?
At what volume level does it occur?
Does the sound come back after you turn the volume down?
If not the above, what do you do to get the speaker or speakers to produce sound again?

Thanks F1nut, last I recall I would try the speaker( just one) on both channels and it would cut in and out, at any volume ... there was definitely some issues with the highs and mids droid head thing, distortion or generally rougher sound than the other speaker... I can't remember if the woofer was cutting out. ... Today I swapped crossovers and am retesting to see if maybe it was a faulty lead/wire... so far so good.
 
Ok, well it could be any number of things related to the speaker, such as a loose internal connection or cold solder joint or a bad component on the crossover. Keep digging, you'll get there.

Didn't realize I never replied to the thread. I did indeed open it up per F1nut's suggestion; and found a blown cap in each crossover; a resistor fried in the protection circuit housed in the right speaker's mid/tweeter unit.

I gave it to my tech a year ago, but his main business took off right around the time he started work. I should hear from him soon.

@blame vinyl, If you can also inspect the cables that feed from the crossover to the head, perhaps something is loose there. As @F1nut suggests, my overzealous cleaning may have worsened the problem

About that -- is there a way to repair that switch? It just sets the LED to light up at a given power output.
