hey guys kind of new to the whole speaker system. Mainly been using headphones. Anyways i need some advice. Can you please tell me what is a good deal on a certain few speakers. I dont want to rip the guys off. Well i do but lol. Whats a fair price for both buyer and seller is what im asking. Audio Physic Spark (original) Tannoy D500 and Martin Logan aerius I

The only thing im worried about is I dont want to go crazy on a super expensive amplifier right now. So im scared about the Martin logans because I heard they need a very strong amp. There was a pair of B&W 705's that sold for 800. Do you think thats better than what im looking at becuase they are newer? or does age of the speaker not matter as much?

Alot of noob questions and I thank you for your time in answering these questions. Excellent Forum section Dollars and sense!

I kind of wanted to pay max 1200 for the whole stereo system and was planning to use my computer as the source. Maybe this is dumb i dont know. Please let me know

Thanks,
Leo

if your gonna spend money like that, better make sure your sound card is worth it :) ARe you looking for surround sound or just a stereo setup ? There are some pretty good systems you c an put together for that price. Are you looking for new gear or used ?

Hey Wolfwood,
I'm looking for used as I can get more value for my money. Its crazy to me that speakers hold their value so great. I guess its good when i upgrade in the future tho! The main use of the speakers would be music. But I do download a lot of movies and in the future would probably be used for both. As for the soundcard my source for music comes from flac or 320 mp3 (i know mp3's not audiophile) through fiio e7/e9 combo and to either Vsonic Gr07 or audio technica m50 headphones. Its not the best setup. Anyways I wanted just 2 speakers now. Do you have any suggestions. Id appreciate any!!
Thanks, Leo

You can put a nice sounding system together using your soundcard if it uses a good DAC chip. My Prodigy HD2 card uses an AKM4396 chip and sounds great with the right op-amps (THS4032's in this case). I'm using Fortes with Crites tweeter upgrades and I'm very happy with the sound.

I'm not familiar with those speakers except for the Martin Logans and I agree that they do like power. Those Tannoys look like great speakers. It looks like they are rated at 91db sensitivity so they'd be fairly easy to drive.

Well , im an avid craigslist cruiser so I see a wide variety of used audio gear. Lately it seems people are charging more and more for their older stereo equipment. You might need some patience and a little more knowledge base before you go and buy something. Some of the decent priced quality amps / receivers on craigslist are brands like Sansui , Marantz , Pioneer . In fact theres an ad on phoenix right now for a
Sansui g-8000 DC amp / receiver for $300 , that would pare nicely with the Bowers & wilkins DM6 speakers that a dude in tucson is asking 550 - 600 for.

As far as speakers go, just make sure they are compatible with whatever amp your buying. Try to match up the ohms properly and make sure the speakers can handle the power of said amp / receiver. There is a much wider variety of speakers then amps. Sp finding speakers is a rather personal journey. Be sure to do as much research on speakers and receivers that you are considering. For example , many people love sansui amps / receivers , but not everyone thinks sansui speakers sound good. But theyre neither right nor wrong. Everyones hearing is different so Its hard to suggest speakers. I would jsut say Do research, and go with what you like. What YOU think looks and sounds good :)

One speaker suggestion I have is going with a single driver full range system. Here's one example: http://www.tektondesign.com/model81en.html#
To my ears to handle just about anything, and sound amazing. Tekton builds beautiful speakers, you can also find other on E-bay. Another plus is it's easy to mate a sub with them if need be. Also they need very little power to sing, in your case a little chip amp would work well.

thanks for all the responses and it really helps me in starting my search. I was always just looking for speakers, then i thought to get the amp later but it seem both must be considered. I also did not know that the laptop soundcard mattered much so this is extremely helpful. I have an external Fiio e7 dac now which is ok. I can upgrade this tho.

Another noob question is--- If my source is from my laptop. Would I connect the laptop to the reciever, which goes to the amplifier, and then to the speakers?

Wolfwood thanks for the 2 suggestions, I live in Connecticut tho so that would be difficult. Pauldrewry thanks for the tekton ill look into them and markw300d thanks for the computer soundcard tip

Thanks for you help,
Leo

If you are going to source your music from a pc a dedicated sound card or
audio interface is good advise motherboard integrated sound solutions aren't that good I use an M audio interface with asio4all drivers in place of a sound card on the computer I use for music.

Yeah The sansui and b&w pair is overpriced but I was just givin ya an example of what I have floating around in phoenix area :) There def is better deals to be had then that .
