At the suggestion of another AKer, I recently bought some 8" surrounds from seller "bootapest2" on the 'bay. They were pretty inexpensive and worked well on the 3 woofers I refoamed. YMMV but it might be worth checking out since he seems to carry a number of sizes.

I buy bulk/cheap/generic ones from MAT; no complaints (I've ordered from them a number of times).

A company called RSSounds used to have a slightly better selection of cheap/generic surrounds... but I don't know if they are still around and/or if they still do.

I seem to recall a newer thread on this but can't find it, anyone?

Main Electronics and MAT are closed.

Not sure if buying in bulk is a good option, as there's a lot of variations in surrounds. Get the wrong profile, and you're pretty much fu ... fu ... functionally impaired.

Not sure why in bulk, when specific speakers need specific surrounds. An 8”surround for a Snell speaker is different than an 8”surround for something else. With that said, Simply Speakers in Florida is very good.

I have about 8 8" woofers to do that will all take the FF Boston foam.
4 10" woofers
8 Large Advent woofers
If I bought kits for all of these the price would be rather high don't you think?

European drivers such as the SEAS used in the Snell do need special surrounds but I'm
not doing any of those at this time.

I had to redo my Vifa, seas and peerless drivers again as they did not sound right with some of the US supplies, they were good for the usual American companies, jbl, advent,ar,Boston,Polk etc

My crazy diy friend in Germany linked me to these guys and I just rebuilt some snells and they sounded correct like the original, they are curved right and have the right foam texture and viscosity,as per my friend they supply a lot of companies including audio note,I have now way of verifying his claim.after I redid the reform I was shocked at the sound differences
And you get a 21 % discount less vat

FWIW, I reform a bunch of “less than” woofers and some mids and a few tweets.

Cheap genetics are fine. I’m sure the originals were nothing special.

Certain valuable drivers should probably have a “proper” foam and something that fits correctly.

So far I have never found a data sheet on speaker surrounds and only the fact that the seller says they are correct. I don’t find that as proof. But, when I have bought the “correct” foam, they do seem more in line with what you’d expect.

Since the original foam is toast, the reason I need to reform, it’s impossible to tell if the new foam is actually original correct.

Even if you go the extra mile and request surrounds for a specific driver from a reputable supplier, it can be a bit of a crap shoot. I redid my McIntosh XR16's woofs a while back and was happy enough with the results. A bit later, one of the coils went open, so I took both down the road to the pros.

Counter guy says ... "nice job on the surrounds. Too bad they're the wrong ones!"

He did sine tests before and after and I'd been losing a LOT of bottom and cone speed. The only real improvement I'd been hearing was due to the fact that the original surrounds were 30 years old. In this case, after the correct surrounds were in, the difference was readily apparent.

The key to this is finding the supplier of the custom foams. Thing is, the kit sellers won't talk. Why should they? These foams probably cost them $1 or $2 each in bulk, not much more than the generics in other words. It's not rocket science here--it's molded foam. :)

Actually, the exact nature and form of the ring matters a lot for the design 'recipe' (that's what it's called), it IS science.
