Speaker hook up question

vintage 5.0

vintage 5.0
I have a Cayin 50-T integrated tube amp. I am using two sets of 4 ohm speakers. The amp is 35 watts. I am running the speakers off a Niles SVC-2 speaker selector. It is a vintage selector and made to run different types of speakers safely. My question is on my amp do I go off the 4 ohm or 8 ohm hook up. I go from the amp to the Niles set for two sets of 4 ohm. Just wanted to make sure I am on the right amp connection.

If you're running only one set at a time you would connect to the 4 ohm. If you're running them both at the same time, then you're dipping to at least 2 ohms and often lower. That would not be the amp you want to be using in that case.

I'm not familiar with that particular selector, but if like many other Niles selectors with a protection switch, it assures that the amp sees a load of at least 4 ohms when the protection function is activated.

I would think it should be connected to the 4 ohm taps of your amp. When using one pair of 4 ohm speakers at a time, you can turn off the protection function and avoid any reduction in sound quality that the protection circuit causes.

But be sure to activate it when running both pairs simultaneously, as your amp almost assuredly will not handle the combined load of 2 ohms (and probably less at some frequencies) for long.

Try to find the manual for that selector to assure that its protection function works as I described.

Thanks for all the reply,s . I do want to run both sets at same time. I have two rooms hooked together. The Niles unit is made to protect when two sets are used. It is supposed to have protection circuitry to use two 4 ohm sets, two 8 ohm sets or a mixed set. I was wandering What hook up to use on my amp 4 ohm or 8 ohm

The opinion appears to be, for using both pair of 4 ohm speakers you engage the protection switch on the Niles and use the 4 ohm taps on the amp. That said, tap selection seems not set in stone. Some mix/match and prefer the results over the traditional "matched" connections. "By the book" though seems to be the 4 ohm taps.

As I said in my initial reply, use the 4 ohm taps.

I will thanks so much for the information. So does the Niles SVC-2 speaker selector with protection keep it so the amp never sees below 4 ohms.
