Speaker ID help?

scolba

Slappa da bass!
Hey guys...long time no post. :tears:

My wife came across these in her local companies classifieds for FREE...so wanted to see if they are worth the time. Free sure is hard to beat, though, no matter what they are! :)

Wondering if they are some dime store house brand, but never know. So any iders?

Thanks!!
Scott

Gotta love them butt ugly old KLH woofers. I'm actually taking a break from recapping a pair of Model Thirty Three's as I type. Congrats!

Look wrong proportions to be a 6. More like 17 or 20 or 23. But I might be wrong. Oh wait -- I am.

oh wow....these are really surprising! I guess I was missing out! I hooked em up to my main av receiver (yamaha rx-v661) and initially they sounded like complete poop. I flipped it over to the 'pure direct' function....MUCH better. I'm actually not a big fan of this receiver, but didn't want to mess w\ my other setup to demo em. So I threw in some brad paisley (dunno why, but i really like to test speakers w\ his stuff...) and man....that's awesome! There is a little left to be desired in the low end, but I'm positive that's partially the amp and partially the room/setup. The vocals specifically were especially wonderful....not at ALL what I was expecting! All of this I'm sure you all already know, but I dunno...just reinforcing it. :) WOO HOO!

Free tube amp...that would be nice!!

I have a suspicion that you may also be hearing the caps at least partially reforming themselves.

Recap those puppies and you have speakers that will hold you for a while. Search for re cap KLH 6 here for details, involves some light soldering but worth it to bring those classics to full fruition. If you you don't have a soldering iron you can get a cheap one good enough for a job like this at radio shack for like 15 bucks.

the bass might be lacking due to the surround doping disintegrating.. many aker's disagree with treating the surrounds but on my klh 5's and 6's and ar 2ax's it changed the bottom end tremendously. two items actually work...the first is aviation permatex. not the silicone based stuff, but the gasket shelllac in a bottle.. i thinned it with naptha and treated a pair... great results. aileenes tacky glue was used on a another pair i have. i simply thinned it with water and coated the surrounds with 3 coats. the 5's have a great bottom end now and have been in service for 3 years with me. best of luck!

One of Henry Kloss' best efforts

Whatever you do don't rush to redope those woofer surrounds. Read up on it first.

KLH caps are known for drying out so a recap will give good ROI.

Hadn't seen previous post before mine. I suggest contacting RoyC about redoping. Roy and a bunch of other experts over on classicspeakerpages have optimized redoping juice
