Speaker ID thread #47847154

Anyone recognize these? If we can get a definitive ID and they're worthwhile, I'll post them in D&S. The AR XA sitting on top should give a decent idea of their vintage. I don't think they're DIY because a hobbyist would probably have used the same type of wood for all sides, rather than chipboard for the rear to save money.

Clearly a horn tweeter, so not Bozak. They look familiar to me, but I can't place them.

Not clearly any horn whatsoever to me.

With all due respect, i chose my words carefully, stand behind my previous post exactly as it's worded, and will emphasize that the smaller of the 2 rectangular openings on the baffle is about perfect for a Bozak tweeter pair.

That is not to suggest that it is any model of factory Bozak.

Fair enough - a rectangular opening on the baffle doesn't neccesarily mean a horn. But the proportions of the rectangle look longer and narrower than what would be needed for angled Bozak tweeters - I recognize different eyes might see it differently. But would Bozak have put the tweeters vertically oriented, and if not mounted on the woofer, lower than the midrange?
But then there is the port under the woofer - big Bozaks aren't ported, as far as I know. And look at the tweeter and midrange control knobs on the back - I'm trying to recall if any Bozak had external level controls. Whereas many horn systems do, and typically with those brown knobs.

Again, i am not suggesting that they are Bozaks, just that the baffle openings are certainly similar to those of a B-302 Urban or Moorish(less common models that didn't strap the tweeters across the woofer).

The presence of the long rectangular port that doesn't belong on any factory Bozak was the first thing noted in my first post. FWIW, some Bozaks did have a large rear vent with an adjustable sliding door over it. But, i don't think that was intended to function exactly as a port.

I also agree with the knobs not being like anything Bozak i've seen.

Also, i'm not saying there isn't a horn, or even two in them, there very well could be.

The cabinets themselves seem to be a little short on both cosmetic detail and robustness to have come from a very high level manufacturer.

Just my take from what we can see of them...

My only qualm with that supposition, is that there is also another slot- ostensibly, a vent for a ported enclosure. That would have no business whatsoever, with a Bozak driver setup. They do VERY poorly in vented enclosures, due to the high Qts of the woofer. That's why they work so well in infinite baffle- they have high enough Qts to "support" their own bass without much help from the box- add the additional resonant effect of a vent, and the bass gets out of control very quickly, with Bozak drivers.

The only way I could see that working, if that if instead of a tuned vent- it was some sort of aperiodic vent, similar to what Goodmans and Dynaco used. That could be made at least to work with Bozak woofers. I doubt it would be ideal- but it would be a possible way of 'tightening up' the perceived bass response of an infinite baffle- especially if the enclosure size was a bit too small, to start with...

Regards,
Gordon.

You missed my first post, #7. ;)

But for the long rectangular port, the baffle openings are about right for a Bozak load.

I probably should have expounded to say that i wasn't suggesting that they are Bozaks, merely that the 3 fundamental openings visible through the grill(less the long rectangular port) look like they would accept a Bozak Urban or Moorish 302 load.

They could just as easily be loaded with highly unremarkable bits from Utah, Heppner, Oxford, Rola, etc..
