Speaker Nubie question

I recently acquired the baby advent 2 speakers and have a techniques turntable. I read the speakers are 6ohms and some of the vintage receivers are 8+. Any help with choosing a middle of the road receiver? Maybe something fun/vintage?

Get whatever (decent quality) receiver you want, it won't be a problem.

This is pretty much true. Any of the mid to high power amps or receivers of the time will be just fine with those speakers.

One of the characteristics of those speakers is that they like high power amps. They seem to become more alive on lots of power. My advice is to look for 60 watts RMS / channel.

Good luck with your hunt.

FYI, speakers do not have a fixed impedance. The impedance varies with frequency. Most speakers that are labeled as "8 ohm" are really anywhere between 6 ohms and 30 ohms depending upon what frequency you measure the impedance at. You'll be fine with most any decent amplifier (receiver) so long as it is in good condition.

If you wanted to stay within the Advents' time period, a Denon PMA-980R would be a great amp. It has provisions for moving coil and moving magnet phono cartridges. I always thought that the Denon gear back in the day was a cut above most of the rest of the pack. I had it's slightly older little brother, the 700V, as a utility duty test machine that would regularly power multiple sets of speakers against the wishes of the manufacturer. It never gave up the ghost and I believe it's still running in some kid's rental with too many speakers to this day. If you demand a tuner, you have to add it, or move on.
