Hi All,

First, time poster.....LONG time lurker.

Thanks to this community for making this a GREAT SITE!

I'm new to vintage audio and jumping in head first with a Marantz set-up that should be arriving this week:

112 Tuner
140 Amp
3200 Pre-Amp

I'm now moving on to the speakers: the question is, what's the right speaker for this set-up and musical tastes that will range from classic rock to jazz and classical in multiple formats, vinyl, cassette, CD and AAC files.

I've been eyeballing a couple of contenders that are available locally:

ADS L810s
ADS M9/90
Marantz HD77

Would love listening impressions of these from SS Marantz owners or leads on other brands/models that would pair well.

Thanks in advance; looking forward to participating actively on these boards.

Cheers!

Welcome to A.K., lots of variables to consider, room size, placement, personal taste, etc. Not familiar with the sound of the speakers mentioned, again welcome to A.K.

I have the same setup, right now I'm playing it through a set of Marantz HD880's.

At 75 wpc the 140 has enough guts to drive most decent speakers. At some point I'll be running it through a set of Large Advents. The Advents were the speaker of choice for many when that amp was being made. They always sound good to me when I've run them from my other Marantz amps (1060 and 1250), and they should be much easier to find than the Marantz HD series speakers.

If you are willing to venture away from traditional boxes I've also fed my Magneplanar SMGa's from my 140/3200/112 stack and they sound absolutely wonderful!

If you can find a pair of Dynaco A25's - get them...I think they make a classic combination with the Marantz components particularly with your musical focus.

for me, vintage marantz and vintage AR (classic period through the vertical series of the late 70's early 80's) are like peas in a pod....

vintage advent (OLA or SA) are a good fit, too.

Klipsch Forte's sound great with my 140/3200 setup.

Crite’s modified Fortes, Crites modified Cornwall IIs (2 pair), Marantz 1060, Marantz 140amp, Marantz 170DC amp, Marantz 240 amp, Marantz 250 amp, Marantz 3200, Marantz 3250, Marantz 3300, Marantz 3600, Marantz 115B Tuner, Marantz 105 Tuner. A Gaggle of Carver receivers, Ohm 2's, Dahlquist 9's, Denon Cd, Technics SL-Q2, SL7 and an AR-XA. A Grant Fidelity Tube processor, JWN Tube Amp, and an Ampex 018 tube pre-amp/tuner.

I ran a pair of Rectilinear IIIs through a Marantz 2270 for 20 years, from 1975 to 1995. I loved this combination. Warm, clear sound with very decent low-end extension. The Rectilinears are a bit wieldy in size and weighed about 70 lbs each, but they provided me with much musical enjoyment.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies everyone! Could anyone tell me what a fair price for a clean set of HD-77's would be?

If you can build a cabinet you can make a sweet pair of Dynaco A-25's. Simple to make and the sound is as good as most any speaker of that era. In it's size catagory of course. In many ways it out does Advent and even a lot of the JBL three ways.

Seas, the Danish company that makes the drivers for the A-25 hit gold with that woofers design. The tweeter is no longer available. but fortunately it there is a BETTER replacement. The Seas 27TDFC silk dome tweeter.

I would consider Advents. My buddy has a little MARANTZ 2220 and a pair of ADVENT LegacyIII's. That damn little system sounds better than my Marantz 2275 and PIONEER HPM100's or Bose601's. My other buddy has an ADCOM amp and ADCOM preamp with huge KLIPSH speakers and my buddy's little 2220 sounds better. I am getting a pair of Advent Heritage's from a buddy in Denver as soon as I can come up with some extra cash. I can't wait to pair 'em up with my 2275 and hear how they match up. dan :music:

I recently paid $100 for a pair of HD-77's that were in very good shape, with re-foamed drivers. The cabinets needed a little work which I am able to do so it was a perfect match for me.

Charles, what would the components cost for this idea, including the crossovers, drivers, and terminals... but not the cabinets?

What are the dimensions of the A-25 cabs?

I am confident with my woodworking ability, but know nothing about electronics - except that I like good sounding music!

each speaker would get:

an 8-10uF cap, terminal cup, hookup wire, and maybe an L pad

so ~ $190 ea in parts, + the cabinets....I'd build the larger A35 cabinet to help out the bottom end a bit...
